According to an advertisement he produced it to suit "the circumstances and ease of the citizens of every denomination of those States having for its end conciseness in substance simplicity in arrangement and cheapness in the purchase thereof." Following the model of his earlier Digest of the Laws of Maryland 1799 Herty arranged the main texts of all Federal public laws alphabetically under general heads with references to other heads as they may have enlarged abridged or otherwise altered each other. A useful supplement to early Federal session law all entries contain references to The Laws of the United States. Texts of the Constitution and the Articles of Confederation are also included as well as the texts of important treaties and a table of duties. Both volumes have extensive indexes. Thomas Herty was a conveyancer in Washington City DC and the author of A Digest of the Laws of Maryland 1799. unknown books

Scholar and philosopher, descended on his father's side from Dov Baer (the Maggid) of Mezeritch and Abraham Joshua Heschel of Apta (Opatow) ; on his mother's side from Levi Isaac of Berdichev. After traditional Jewish studies, he obtained rabbinic ordination (semikhah) . At the age of 20 he enrolled in the University of Berlin, where he obtained his doctorate, and at the Hochschule fuer die Wissenschaft des Judentums, where he also taught Talmud and received a second, liberal rabbinical ordination. In 1937 Martin Buber appointed him his successor at the central organization for Jewish adult education (Mittelstelle fuer juedische Erwachsenenbildung) and the Juedisches Lehrhaus at Frankfurt on the Main. Deported by the Nazis in October 1938 to Poland, he taught for eight months at the Warsaw Institute of Jewish Studies. He immigrated to England where he established the Institute for Jewish Learning in London. In 1940 he was invited by Julian Morgenstern to teach at Hebrew Union College in Cincinnati, where he was associate professor of philosophy and rabbinics for five years. From 1945 he taught at the Jewish Theological Seminary of America (JTS) as professor of Jewish ethics and mysticism. In 1946 he married Sylvia Strauss, who gave birth to Susannah Heschel, who followed in the footsteps of her father as a scholar of Judaism. Heschel visited Israel and called for the renewal of the prophetic vision in Zion. He served as professor at JTS until his death, combining his professional activities with extensive social action. Hess' paper: pp. 325-335. Stamps on verso of titlepage. Internally clean. <br/><br/><em>First edition of Hess's most famous paper in which he outlined his law on thermochemistry. His principle a progenitor for the first law of thermodynamics came to be called Hess's law. It states that in a series of chemical reactions the total energy gained or lost depends only on the initial and final states regardless of the number or path of the steps. This is also known as the law of constant heat summation. Hess described here his newly discovered law known as Hess's Law in form of a letter to Arago. The letter was also published in Comptes Rendus in a slightly modified form. "Here thermochemistry received its first importent advance at the hands of Germain Hess who showed that the heat evolved in a reaction is the same regardless of whether the reaction is carried out directly or in a number of steps." Leicester & Klickstein "A Source Book in Chemistry" pp. 329-332. This paper preceded the larger papers also published in "Annales de Chimie et de Physique" and the original and larger paper in "Bulletin scientifique Academie impériale des Sciences St. Petersbourg 1840".
