Copy presented to Syud Hossain by the Californian Democratic Congressman Edward McGlynn Gaffney, with a full-page presentation inscription commending India's struggle for independence: "Edward McGlynn Gaffney, March 2, 1923, Presented to Syud Hossain with the fond hope that the sterling Americanism expressed by these men of America's past may someday find expression in deeds of service to India in her struggle for freedom." Dr Syud Hossain (1888-1949) was instrumental in forging links between American-based Indian nationalists and the Indian National Congress. A co-founder of the National Committee for Indian Independence (headquartered in Washington, DC), Hossain spearheaded the Indian lobby for self-rule from abroad. "Immaculately dressed, polished in manners, brilliant in oratory, Hossain captivated his audiences from coast to coast", said A. K. Mozumdar, a colleague and fellow activist of Hossain. The Los Angeles Times described him as "the most distinguished Indian visitor in America since Tagore", while according to the New York-based Foreign Policy Association, "of the hundreds of speakers who have addressed our conferences during the past five years, none were more brilliant or authoritative than Mr Hossain". - In September 1945, Hossain suggested to Jawaharlal Nehru that he return to India to work towards Hindu-Muslim harmony and stand for elections. After consulting Asaf Ali and Gandhi, Nehru cabled back: "Gandhiji thinks you can do more important work in America". Hossain briefly served as India's first ambassador to Egypt, where he died in 1949. - The popular California Senator Edward McGlynn Gaffney (Democrat) enjoyed election continuously from 1940 to 1962. - Extremities rubbed; contents clean and crisp. The rare first edition of one of the major works of mercantilism, with many valuable suggestions for improvements to the Austrian economy. First published anonymously, the work soon achieved great popularity and by 1784 had been reprinted some fifteen times. It was, however, never translated (and Carpenter explains that "one need look no further than the title to ascertain one of the reasons"). - Binding rubbed, extremeties bumped. Some browning throughout as common. The lower third of fol. G12 has been torn away; the text has been supplied in the early 20th century on an inserted folding slip of typescript paper. - Provenance: from the library of the noted economist Oskar Morgenstern (1902-77) with his pencil ownership to flyleaf. In collaboration with the mathematician John von Neumann, the German-born Morgenstern, who taught at Princeton University, founded the mathematical field of game theory and its application to economics. A well-received edition of one of the major works of mercantilism, with many valuable suggestions for improvements to the Austrian economy. First published in 1684, the work achieved great popularity and by 1784 had been reprinted some fifteen times. It was, however, never translated (and Carpenter explains that "one need look no further than the title to ascertain one of the reasons"). The present edition, the thirteenth according to Carpenter, is the first to contain the "Impartial Thoughts About the Austrian Economy" (pp. 317-420), with a separate title-page, "compiled from the papers of an experienced cameralist", possibly the anonymous publisher of this edition. - Ownership stamp of the lawyer Dr. M. Signature: Vol. I aâ¸bcâ¶dâ¸eâ¶fâ¸ghâ¶iâ¸klâ¶m–o⸠Vol. II: Aâ¸B–Eâ¶FGâ¸Hâ¶</p><p>Nice incunable edition by the renowned Strasburg Printer Johann Reinhard Grüninger printed in red and black rubricated in red and blue</p><p>The <i>Liber Sextus Decretalium</i> part of the <i>Corpus Juris Canonici</i> is a collection of regulations of canon law promulgated with the bull <i>Sacrosanctae</i> on 3 March 1298 by Pope Boniface VIII to integrate the <i>Liber Extra</i> the <i>Decretalium</i> by Pope Gregorius IX with the new canonical norms issued by 1234.</p><p>It was initially intended as an appendix to the same <i>Liber Extra</i> by Gregorio IX but it is better considered a real collection by itself divided into five books based on the example already provided by the <i>Quinque compilationes antiquae </i>the anthologies grouping the decretals issued in the period following the issuing of the <i>Decretum Gratiani</i> composed in order by Bernardo Balbi Giovanni di Wales Innocent IV Giovanni Teutonico and Tancredi from Bologna.</p><p> At the end of the work it appears for the first time in a canonical compilation the <i>De Regulis Iuris</i> in imitation of the Digest written by the jurist Dino del Mugello.</p><p>The work is then followed by the fundamental treatise on family by Giovanni De Andrea the <b><i>Super arboribus consanguinitatis et affinitatis.</i></b></p><p>The<i> Constitutiones </i>by Pope Clemens V or <i>Constitutiones Clementinæ</i> not officially known as <i>Liber Septimus</i> but so designated by historians and canonists of the Middle Ages were officially promulgated by Clement V in a consistory held at Monteaux near Carpentras southern France on 21 March 1314 and sent to the University of Orléans and the Sorbonne in Paris.</p><p>The death of Clement V occurring on 20 April of the same year gave rise to certain doubts as to the legal force of the compilation. Consequently John XXII by his Bull <i>Quoniam nulla</i> of 25 October 1317 promulgated it again as obligatory without making any changes in it. Johannes Andreæ compiled its commentary or <i>Glossa Ordinaria</i>. It was not an exclusive collection and did not abrogate the previously existing laws not incorporated in it</p><p>Johannes Grüninger 1455–1533 was a German printer mainly based in Strasburg whose career spanned from 1482–1533 and produced up to 500 publications. Grüninger was one of the single most prolific printers of Strasbourg printing up to 80 books a year. While a great deal of his publications was Catholic he managed to print a great variety of works ranging from humanist to scientific texts. Deaccessed by the NY Association of the Bar Library with their stamp on the title page.<br /> <br /> An Indian murder tried under British law in which Parsi defendants were accused of murdering another Parsi adherents of Zoroastrianism in Bombay with a rapid and harsh sentence meant to instill fear of British law and punishment in the local people. <br /> <br /> The trial was held at the Supreme Court before the British Chief Justice of Bombay Sir Henry Roper. The all European jury produced a guilty verdict against ten of the eighteen with 8 acquitted.
