First original edition of the conference publication, "The Capitalist World and the Communist International - Manifesto of the 2nd Congress of the 3rd Communist International". Two years after the end of the First World War, and only one after the Comintern had been founded, the Second Congress of the Communist International, representing thirty-five countries, met at Petrograd (St. Petersburg, soon to be renamed Leningrad) on 17 July 1920, continuing its sessions in Moscow to August 7. "Its purpose was to form a clear idea regarding the international situation, to cast a retrospective glance over the road already traveled, and to establish the milestone of further struggle. The World Congress of the Communist International unanimously addresses this manifesto to the workingmen and women of the whole world with the profound conviction that its aims are just and its methods correct" (preface to the American edition, published the same year). Owing to the ad-hoc nature of the 1919 founding convention, the 1920 Second World Congress of the Comintern has been regarded as the first authentic international meeting of the new organization's members and supporters. The gathering is also significant for the participation of Lenin, who took a more active part than any other member, preparing a host of key documents and actively helping to chart the course of the conference. The list of signatories at the end, from 33 countries, is headed by the Russians Lenin, Zinoviev, Bukharin, and Trotsky. The American delegation includes John Reed, author of "Ten Days that Shook the World", only months from his death. The English delegation includes Sylvia Pankhurst, the daughter of Emmeline Pankhurst and like her a prominent suffragist (though, unlike her, a communist). The signing Chinese delegate was Lao Hsiu-chao, who was born in China in 1892 but lived in Russia from age five. "[A]fter the Chinese communist victory in 1949 he held various diplomatic posts in the new regime. In 1954 he was a member of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference and in the early 1960s was adviser to the judicial section of the Chinese ministry of foreign affairs" (Lazitch/D., Biographical Dictionary of the Comintern [1973], p. 211). - Browned throughout, with some waterstaining to margins. Moscow: Krasnaya Nov, 1924. 104 pp. With 2 frontispieces. One of the first Lenin biographies written by N. Popov (1891-1938). A former menshevik, and from 1919 onwards a bolshevik, he held various positions in the party buerocracy. He was executed in 1938. - 2) Lenin, I. Karl Marx. Kratkij bìograficeskij ocerk s izlozeniem marksizma [i.e. Karl Marx. The Short Biography with the Summary of Marxism]. Moscow: MKRKP, 1924. 39 pp. One of 3000 copies. Second edition of the book, the first of which had appeared in 1918. - 3) Lenin, I. O prodovolstvennom naloge [i.e. On the Food Tax]. Rostov-On-Don, 1921. 39 pp. One of 10,000 copies. First edition. Very rare. In this brochure Lenin defends the necessity for a food tax in the midst of the Civil War, during the famine in Central Russia. - 4) Lenin, I. Moscow: Kommunist, 1918. 32 pp. Second edition; the first had appeared the previous year. - 5) Kratkaya biografiya V. I. Lenina [i.e. The Short Biography of V. I. Lenin]. Rostov-On-Don, 1921. 32 pp. One of Lenin's seminal speeches at the 10th meeting of the Party. Brochures of the text were printed simultaneously in Gomel, Rostov, Moscow and Saratov. The speech was about the substitution of the "prodrazverstka" (the Red Army's practice of requisitioning food from the peasants, widespread during the Civil War) to a more civilized system of taxation. - 9) Lenin, V. Proletarskaia revoliutsiia i renegat Kautskii [i.e. The Proletarian Revolution and the Renegade Kautsky]. Moscow, Kommunist, 1918. 135, (1) pp. First edition of one of Lenin's most famous books of the period: a reply to Kautsky's moderate-socialist attack on him and the 'Dictatorship of the Proletariat' in 1918. Kautsky was banished from Russia in 1918, whereupon the theoreticians and practitioners of Marxism had split. Extremely rare. - 10) Stalin, I. O Lenine i leninizme [i.e. On Lenin and Leninism]. 2nd edition. Moscow: GIZ, [1924]. 92, [4] pp. The second edition of Stalin's classic work on Lenin. Created immediately after Lenin's death, it went through several dozen editions during the next decades. - 11) Stalin, I. V. I. Lenin. Moscow, 1924. 16 pp. One of 5000 copies. Another lesser known brochure by Stalin about Lenin. It was originally written in 1920 and published in "Pravda" at the time. This is the first separate book edition. - Some dampstaining to the portrait frontispieces; occasional pencil markings. Extremeties somewhat bumped in places. A few edge defects to the final leaves of item 1 and the first leaves of item 7, which adjoin the 12mo brochures 2 through 6.

It advocates the immediate convention of the Third Party Congress as the only means to "clarify the situation, settle the disputes, and confine the struggle within proper bounds". The appeal was presented and adopted at the conference of the 22 Bolsheviks held in Switzerland in August 1904 under Lenin's leadership. A total of 19 persons actually attended, and three others subscribed to its decisions. Eventually, the Third Congress of the Russian Social Democratic Labour Party was held from 25 April to 10 May 1905 in London. - A few insignificant marginal flaws. Scarce provincial edition of a pamphlet authored and published between May and July 1917, when the Bolsheviks attempted further to prepare the impoverished peasants for the second step of the Revolution. The speech contained Lenin's theses formulated during the April Congress of the Russian Social-Democratic Labor Party, during which it was decided that complete nationalization of the land was necessary. The pamphlet was printed in large numbers and distributed in rural areas and among front soldiers, and played an important role in convincing Russian peasants of the Bolshevik cause. - Old inventory number to front wrapper; else very good.

First and only issue of the extremely scarce journal (only one issue appeared), which presents the results of the Zimmerwald Conference on September 5-8, 1915. The journal represents the views of the "Zimmerwald-Left", a coalition of revolutionary socialists who forcefully disagreed with the social democrats around Kautsky in their approach to the war. While the German Social Democrats had voted for war credits in 1914 and spoke out in favor of defending the fatherland, the socialist revolutionaries argued placing the solidary of the international proletariat over national interests and called for the dissolution of the Second International. The issue contains articles by numerous members of the Organizing Committee of the foreign secretariate of the Russian Socialist Revolutionary Party, such as A. Martynov and Iurii Larin. It also reproduces the full manifesto that was approved by the participants, and into which Lenin inserted several key demands of revolutionary, anti-militarist socialism, followed by the signature of Lenin and other members of the various national delegations. - Rare; we are unable to locate auction records either in Russia or the West. - Light wear to spine extremities; still very good. First and only issue (a double issue) of the journal founded by Lenin, containing the first appearance of his important article "Krakh II Internatsionala" ("The collapse of the II International", written May-June, 1915). In this work, Lenin "was signalling, for the first time in his career, that the establishment had become an immediate possibility and objective" and indicated his striving towards a third International (Fobert Service, Lenin, p. 82). Two other articles by Lenin are also printed here: "Chestnyi golos frantsuzskogo sotsialista" ("The honest voice of a French socialist") and "Imperializm i sotsializm v Italii" ("Imperialism and socialism in Italy"). Work on the publication was complicated by conflicts within the editorial team: Lenin opposed the anti-Party group around Bukharin and Piatakov, seeking to expose its anti-bolshevik views and to create two separate groups. He was extremely disappointed when the journal eventually appeared and, as a result, the editors of "Sotsial-Demokrat" began publishing a new journal, entitled "Sbornik sotsial-demokrata" beginning in 1916; "Kommunist" was discontinued. "In his subsequent account, Lenin claimed that the journal had served its purpose once it had printed Socialism and the War by Lenin and Zinoviev" (Service, Lenin, p. 112). - Rare; we are unable to locate auction records either in Russia or the West. - Wrappers lightly toned; else a very good, uncut and unopened copy. First, very rare and unexpurged edition of the proceedings of the important Third Congress of the Russian Social-Democratic Workers' Party, held in London. "Believing that an insurrection was imminent, Lenin set out to wrest control of the Party from the Mensheviks. In April he summoned his followers for what he designated the Third Congress of the All-Russian Social Democratic Party. Convening in London from 25 April to 10 May 1905, this Congress was attended only by Bolsheviks, including Litvinov, Kamenev, Rykov, Krassin and Lunacharsky. "Lenin had little difficulty getting his programme adopted in London. The Bolshevik delegates accepted him as their leader, and gave him carte blanche. The immediate task was to organize an armed uprising, the Congress declared. The Mensheviks were virtually excommunicated, a fact which had no practical significance, inasmuch as they did not recognize the authority of the Third Congress. As far as they were concerned, the London gathering was the first Congress of the Bolshevik party" (David Shub, Lenin, p. 100). - Because this work contains two lengthy discourses by Lenin, the volume is considered a Lenin first edition. Lenin represented the city of Odessa, a city he had never visited. 44 tabloid issues (440 mm), text printed in triple column, bound together in slightly later marbled boards backed with black cloth. Private rubber-stamped library labels to upper cover and spine foot. First edition: the full run of Lenin's (irregularly) weekly political newspaper "Vpered" (January-May 1905), bound with its successor "Proletarii" (May-November 1905), both published by the Russian Social Democratic Labour Party in Geneva. Printed in the same format as Lenin's previous news outlet, "Iskra", which began publication in 1900 in Leipzig and Munich (later continued in Geneva), from where it was illegally smuggled into Russia. Lenin left the editorial staff in 1904 after the paper fell into the hands of the opposing "Menshevik" party faction. He went on to found "Vpered" as a continuation of the still-extant "Iskra", albeit returning to the original Bolshevik platform. Consequently, all three newspapers are near-identical in format, the latter two, however, with the statement at the upper right-hand corner: "Proletarii Vsekh' Stran' Soedinyaytes!" ("All the Proletarians of the Country Unite!"). At head of title of "Vpered" is the French slogan "En Avant"; at head of title of Proletarii: "Le Proletaire". - Boards rubbed, otherwise in very good condition. Old faint rubberstamp of the "Algemeyner Yidisher Arbeter Bund" ("Archiv Bunda") throughout. The "Bund", a Jewish labour and socialist party, was founded in Vilnius, Lithuania, in 1897; in the following year it played a part in the formation of Lenin's Russian Social Democratic Labour Party. By 1921 the activities of the "Bund" came to an end in Russia because of the Bolsheviks' seizure of power.

Three of only four issues (in two volumes) of the "Dawn", an extremely uncommon journal of revolutionary Marxism edited by the Iskra group in Stuttgart. Here Vladimir Ulyanov famously first used the pseudonym "Lenin" to sign a published article (he had begun to use the pseudonym in letters in 1901). - Issue no. 1 contains an article "Sluchainyi zametki" (Random observations) signed by the earlier pseudonym "T. Kh", which he also used for two articles in issue no. 2-3. The third long article, "The Agrarian Question and the 'Critics of Marx'" ("Gg. 'kritiki' v agrarnom voprose") is signed "Lenin". The journal propagated the ideas of revolutionary Marxism and criticized the Narodniks and other more moderate movements. Among the leading contributors were G. Plekhanov, Z. Zasulich, P. Aksel'rod, Iu. Martov, A. Potresov and others. - Issue no. 1 also contains a translation of the memoirs of Karl Kautsky. Also included is a four-page pamphlet (single folded leaf) about a dispute within the editorial team, entitled "Kto vydumal plokhuiu vydumku' ("Who thought up the bad idea?"), written by the economist and philosopher Boris N. Krichevskii (1866-1919). Both volumes are from the famous collection of the Marxist bibliophile and scholar Chimen Abramsky (1916-2010), who fled to London from the Soviet Union in the early 1930s and became a leading specialist in both Judaica and socialist thinking. His collection, parts of which were auctioned after his death, has recently been commemorated in his son's biography, "The House of Twenty Thousand Books" (2014). - Bookplate of the London School of Economics, with withdrawal stamp and Chimen Abramsky's hand-written note inside front wrapper, noting that he exchanged these volumes in 1970. English translation of Lenin's article ("Uroki revoliutsii"), written in late July 1917 and first published in mid-September with an added postscript reflecting on the events of August 1917. During a period when the future form of governance was still undecided, Lenin's pamphlet promotes the idea of the "Soviet" (workers' council) rather than parliamentary democracy. Importantly, the appendix presents one of the first English overviews of the new political reality, defining and discussing such terms as the "Essers," "Mensheviks," "Fist (Kulak)," and "Soviet." The booklet was first published in 1917 by the same publisher (34 pp.); the second edition is presumably updated to reflect political developments in the interim. The pamphlet was also reprinted in San Francisco in 1919 by the People's Institute. This 1918 edition is quite scarce, with KVK and OCLC showing copies at the Danish National Library, Friedrich-Ebert-Stiftung, Harvard (Houghton Library), and Zurich. - A very good copy of a fragile title. Dans le domaine des actes législatifs, les lettres-patentes étaient des textes par lesquels le roi rendait public et opposable à tous un droit, un état, un statut ou un privilège. Pour prendre effet, les lettres patentes devaient être enregistrées par un parlement, c'est-à-dire publiées afin de devenir opposables aux tiers. Bon état.
