AKBABA. YUSUF ZIYA ORTAÇ and ORHAN SEYFI ORHON (Owners).
[THE LAST BULLFIGHTING IN SPAIN!] Akbaba. No: 192. 10 Eylül 1937. Ispanyada son boga dögüsü! [Anti-Nazi and Soviet propaganda]. Illustration by Cemal Nadir, (1902-1947).
Very Good Turkish Original color illustrated cover. Folio. (32 x 24 cm). In Turkish. 17, [1] p., color and b/w ills. An amazing cover illustration Nazi anti-propaganda and USSR (Soviets). It's seen a black Nazi bull angry by the red Soviet flag. "Ispanyada son boga dögüsü!" [i.e. The last bullfighting in Spain!]. This great cover was illustrated by Cemal Nadir [Güler], (1902-1947). He was a Turkish cartoonist. Güler is the surname he assumed after the Surname Law of 1934. Cemal Nadir was born in Bursa, Ottoman Empire on 13 July 1902. His father Sevket was a calligraphist (Turkish: Hattat) employed in courts. After finishing high school, he began working as a sign painter in Bursa. He also created cartoons, and his first cartoon appeared in Diken (literally: "The Thorn") periodical. Although he moved to Istanbul and tried to be a full-time cartoonist, he could not make it and he returned to Bursa. The Alphabet Reform of 1929 gave Cemal Nadir a second chance to show his talent. When Turkey adopted the Latin alphabet replacing the Ottoman Turkish alphabet in Arabic script, all signboards were necessarily changed, and he worked hard to meet the demand. In the same year, he moved once more to Istanbul to work for the daily Aksam. Later, he also drew for the newspaper Son Posta, as well as for the satirical magazines such as Akbaba. During this period, he published the satirical magazine Amcabey. During World war II, he drew anti-Nazism cartoons in the daily Cumhuriyet. In 1946, the Republican People's Party (CHP) invited him to run for a seat in the parliament. However, he refused the invitation, he said that with political affiliation he would not be able to create cartoons. He used his conflicting cartoon characters to criticize the social problems of that time in the country. (Ak'la Kara ("Black and White")., Dede ile Torun ("The Grandpa and the Grandson")., Dalkavuk ("The Sycophant")., Yeni Zengin ("Nouveau riche")., Salamon).

BEHICE BORAN, (President of the Workers' Party of Turkey), (1910-1987).
Turkey and the world of today.
Fine English Paperback. Foolscap 8vo. (17 x 12 cm). In English. 44 p. The main democratic force in Turkey as elsewhere is the working class which makes itself heard through its own political party. After the military coup d'etat of March 12th, 1971, a time of tough repression fell upon the working class and its legal political party was banned, but the working class emerged period of repression. The political party of the working class is being built and developed on this solid foundation.". Behice Boran was a Turkish Marxist politician, author, and sociologist. As a dissenting political voice from the left, Boran was repeatedly imprisoned for her work and died in exile after the Turkish military coup of 1980. Boran was born in Bursa to Volga Tatar parents whose families had settled in the Ottoman Empire during the 1890s. She graduated from American College for Girls in Istanbul, Turkey, and studied sociology at the University of Michigan in the United States. She received her Ph.D. in sociology in 1939 from Michigan and was involved in Marxism. She was nominated to Ankara University, Faculty of Language and History-Geography (AÜ, DTCF) as an associate professor. She also joined the clandestine Communist Party of Turkey (TKP) and began publishing left-wing periodicals, Yurt ve Dünya (English: Motherland and World) and Adimlar (English: Steps), which led to her sacking from the university. In 1950, she led the formation of the Turkish Peacelovers Association, which protested against Turkey's participation in the Korean War, which led to her arrest and a sentence of 15 months in prison. Between 1965-69, Boran served as a deputy from the Workers Party of Turkey (TIP) in the Turkish parliament. In 1970, she assumed the leadership of the party. She was arrested after the military coup of 1971 and sentenced to 15 years of imprisonment. After she was released following an amnesty, she re-established the TIP in 1975. After the military coup of 1980, Boran went into exile in Europe, living as a political refugee in Sofia, Brussels, and Düsseldorf. In 1987, she announced that TIP and TKP had decided to merge. She died soon after this press conference from heart disease in Brussels, Belgium. She was 77 years old. Her body was brought to Istanbul and her funeral turned into a mass demonstration, the first public show of force of Turkey's left-wing movement after the coup. (Wikipedia).

AVRAM BENAROYA [AVRAAM ELIEZER], (1887-1979).
[RARE OTTOMAN STENOGRAPHY BOOK BY THE FIRST TURKISH-JEWISH SOCIALIST AND A KEY FIGURE OF THE FOUNDATION OF THE COMMUNIST PARTY OF GREECE] Türkçe lisanina mahsûs stenografya usûlü. [i.e. Stenography in Turkish language].
Very Good Turkish, Ottoman (1500-1928) Paperback. Demy 8vo. (21 x 15 cm). In Ottoman script. 4, 77 p., 1 plate. Stain some pages, slight tear on the fifth page, text unaffected. Otherwise a good copy. Benaroya was a Jewish socialist, member of the Bulgarian Social Democratic Workers' Party (Narrow Socialists), later leader of the Socialist Workers' Federation in the Ottoman Empire. Benaroya played a key role in the foundation of the Communist Party of Greece in 1918. Idealistic and pragmatic at the same time, in Thessaloniki Benaroya played a leading role in the creation, in 1909, of the mainly Jewish Socialist Workers' Federation, or in Ladino, Federacion. The organization took this name because built on the federative model of the Social Democratic Party of Austria, it was conceived as a federation of separate sections, each representing the four main ethnic groups of the city: Jews, Bulgarians, Greeks, and Turks. It published its literature in the languages of these four groups (i.e., Ladino, Bulgarian, Greek, and Turkish, respectively) but in practice, the two latter sections were under-represented if not nonexistent. The democratic Federacion soon became, under Benaroya's leadership, the strongest socialist party in the Ottoman Empire. It created combative trade unions, attracted important intellectuals, and gained a solid base of support among Macedonian workers while cultivating strong links with the Second International. From 1910 to 1911 Benaroya edited its influential newspaper, the Solidaridad Ovradera, printed in Ladino. Unlike other parties that were organized on ethnic lines, as a cross-community group, the Federacion was allowed by the Ottoman authorities. A prominent Bulgarian member, Dimitar Vlahov, was a socialist MP in the new Ottoman parliament until 1912. Indeed, its leaders initially supported the Young Turks, and Benaroya participated in the "Army of Freedom" march on Istanbul to help put down the Countercoup of 1909. Alarmed by the growing power of socialist groups, the CUP subsequently launched a crackdown, under which Benaroya was jailed three times, in early November 1910, June 1911 (when he was deported to Serbia), and February 1912 (when he was deported to Greece). Benaroya was interested in the Jewish Question since the beginning of his career and made efforts to promote Jewish causes throughout it. His first book was The Jewish Question and Social Democracy (1908) while once in Thessaloniki he founded a group called the Sephardic Circle of Socialist Studies. He also played a leading role in the creation, in 1909, of the mainly Jewish Federation. Apprehensive of what the resurgent Greek self-confidence behind the Megali Idea might mean for Jews in Greece and Asia Minor, at the time he labeled the campaign imperialist. He envisaged a state free from any ethnic divisions where Jews could exist un-persecuted and free, retaining their religion. Some of his fears might have been argued to have been realized when after the city's fire, the Venizelos administration did not rebuild the original Jewish section, adopting instead a French town plan, but a considerable proportion of the Jewish population remained throughout the following decades, with the Greek government guaranteeing their rights in March 1926. Benaroya was always very interested in combating anti-Semitism, while over later years he shifted his emphasis to reflect the sizable Thessaloniki Jewish community that chose to remain within the Greek state. After a historic meeting with Venizelos, Benaroya's tactical abilities resulted in the birth of the Socialist Labour Party of Greece (later named Communist) and the General Confederation of Greek Workers, which helped unite Greek workers. This extremely rare book on stenographic style in the Turkish / Ottoman language. Özege 21579.; TBTK 5898.; Only two institutional copies in OCLC. 777181494 (KOÇ University Library; Universiteitsbibliotheek Leiden). First and Only Edition.

AMÎN IZZ AL-DIN, (1921-2001).
[EGYPTIAN SOCIALISM] Târîkh al-tabaqah al-âmilah al-Misrîyah: Mundhu nash'atiha hatta thawrat 1919. [i.e. A history of the Egyptian working class: From its inception until the 1919 Revolution].
Very Good Arabic First book of three of the first edition of this early set on Egyptian working class and Arabian labour, printed in Cairo by one of the pioneer intellectual Amin Izz al-Din, (1921-2001). This rare book includes the formative period of the Egyptian working class especially between the years 1882-1919, from the British occupation of Egypt in 1882 which was crystallized many of the economic trends which had been maturing since the era of Muhammad Ali Pasha of Kavala (1769-1849), to Tawra [i.e. The Egyptian Revolution of 1919] which was a countrywide revolution against the British occupation of Egypt and Sudan. It was carried out by Egyptians from different walks of life in the wake of the British-ordered exile of the revolutionary Egyptian Nationalist leader Saad Zaghlul, and other members of the Wafd Party in 1919. Before the Revolution, by 1914 foreign capital represented 70 per cent of the total capital invested in Egypt. According to Izz al-Din, from 1899 to 1903 at least eight workers' associations were formed, mainly under Greek, Italian and Armenian leadership. But the steady expansion of capitalist relations of production in Egypt and the continuing British occupation provided the conditions which soon led to the appearance of native Egyptian working-class organization and leadership. The crash of 1907 produced a sharp rise in the cost of living and provided the economic incentive for another round of working-class struggle. At the same time, the Egyptian national movement was about to assert itself as a significant new political force. The conjuncture of these factors was the basis for sustained struggle and organization of native Egyptian workers. [.] The strike wave led to the formation of new and more soundly organized unions. There were 43 trade unions functioning in 1919-1920: 19 in Cairo, 18 in Alexandria, and 6 in Port Said, Damietta, Damanhour and Mahalla al-Kubra. [.] In the mid-1920s many enterprises fired workers and attempted, with some success, to disregard or revise agreements reached with trade unions in the first years after the 1919 uprising. There were series of strikes in 1927 in response to these actions - the Alexandria Water Company, Alexandria Tram Company, railway porters, silk weavers, Cairo cigarette workers and Suez Canal workers at Port Said. But by 1927 the number of trade unions had dropped to 62 with a total membership of somewhat more than 21,000. (Source: Formation of the Egyptian Working Class / MERIP). Amin Izz al-Din was a thinker and historian of the Egyptian trade union movement and a prominent historian of the Egyptian labour movement. He was one of the most prominent popular and labour leaders, and he has spent his life serving this movement. Izz al-Din held various leadership positions in the interest of workers and social security, as well as political organizations, as he previously worked in the Office of Arab Affairs at the Presidency of the Republic, and contributed to drafting labour legislation in 1970 and laying the foundations on which the Federation of Egyptian Workers was based. Bachelor of Arts from Cairo University, and a Masters degree from Oxford University British Labour Studies: A number of books have been written, foremost of which is "The History of the Egyptian Working Class", in 3 parts. Half leather bound in Egyptian style raised six bands to spine, Arabic lettered gilt in second and fourth. 'Abdelzehar Bnding' stamp on back endpaper. Demy 8vo. (21 x 14 cm). In Arabic. 213, [1] p. OCLC 23517320.
