INED 2992; Goldsmiths 10372; Higgs 4248; Einaudi A.514 (1792 edition). First published in 1763, with a second edition in that same year. Probably written in 1761 and published in 1763, this was by far the best known and best received work by Mably. It was awarded the prize for the best work of the year by the Société littéraire suisse and it was translated into Italian, German, Swedish, English, Polish, Spanish and Greek and was twelve times reprinted before the revolution.The dialogue purports to be the translation af a Greek manuscript recently discovered at Monte Cassino, whose author, a certain Nicocles, had been present at a series of didactic conversations between the doomed Athenian commander Phocion and a young fellow-citizen named Aristias. After a long exploration of the "relations between politics and morality," the dialogue ends on a sharply pessimistic note, befitting its somber historical context. Despite its classical costume, Entretiens de Phocion is certainly contemporary in its concerns: a reaction to the political and intellectual upheavals of the decade of the 1750s. The Political Thought of Mably, pp. 80-93.Gabriel Bonnot de Mably (1709-1785), French historian, moralist and political philospher. After he retired Mably began to produce a number of works, most of which were oriented about the purpose of ameliorating the contemporary evils of France but which carried him into widely ramified branches of social and political philosophy. His works plainly reveal his intimate acquaintance with the thought of Plato, Cicero, Locke, and his brother Condillac. Although he firmly believed that political and legal equality had no meaning without economic equality, Mably connot, however, be classed as a communist, although he is frequently so regarded and although he actually inspired Babeuf. He believed communism to be the ideal system and posited the possibility that it had existed in the primitive state of man. But a quality of realism and an inclination toward the evolutionary standpoint prevented him from espousing any political system which failed to take full account of human nature and of the peculiar history and customs of the people concerned. - Preliminaries xix-xx with two small spots obscuring a few letters.‎

Modern half morocco, marbled boards, gilt lettering to spine "Procès Politiques de 1838." 1: Armand Laity was one of Louis-Napoleon Bonaparte's partners in the attempt to raise the garrison at Strasbourg in 1836. In 1838 he published an apologetic account of it and was almost immediately arrested by the government, sentenced to 5 years in prison and one franc fine for every copy printed, in all 10,000 francs.2: Le National was an important revolutionary and republican newspaper of the Restoration, the July Monarchy, and the Second Republic. It was founded by Adolphe Thiers, François-Auguste Mignet and Armand Carrel with the express purpose of overthrowing not merely the Polignac government but the Bourbon dynasty. Le National was among only four newspapers that continued publication despite the July Ordinances.3: Aloysius Huber was a socialist conspirator and member of secret societies during the July Monarchy, and a leader of political clubs during the Second Republic. He was influenced by the theories of the socialist Pierre Leroux and quite active during the 1830 Revolution. Disappointed by the results of the revolution, he joined the Society of the Rights of Man and was sentenced to five years in prison for complicity in the Neuilly plot. Freed by the amnesty of 1837, he left for London but soon returned to Paris and was again put in jail, this time for conspiracy to assassinate the king. - The original covers of the second and third work have been preserved. Nice clean copies.‎

Accused of 'defaitism' Rappoport was condemned to prison and this pamphlet was confiscated and seized by the police. It had therefore to be published clandestinely.Charles Rappoport (1865, Duktas, Lithuania - November 17, 1941, Saint-Cirq-Lapopie, Cahors, France) was a Russian-born French militant communist politician, journalist and writer. A Jewish intellectual, and a multilingual scholar, he's been referred to as "a grand man of French radicalism".Exceptional copy with a very significant autograph dedication by the author to M. Rolland, dated 10 november 1918, reading: 'fin des crimes capitaliste et nationaliste'.‎

Il s'intéressa de près au développement du saint-simonisme, et le librairie d'ancien, Michel Bernstein, nous a communiqué les volumes de sa collection du Globe, où se lisaient quelques annotations de sa main' (Maitron). Gaston Richard, in his study La Question sociale et le Mouvement Philosophique au XIXe siècle states however: 'Renouvier avait adhéré dans sa jeunesse à l'école sociétaire de Charles Fourier. Il ne rompit jamais avec elle et tint toujours compte de ses jugements. La Critique philosophique qu'il fonda après 1870 admit des fouriéristes parmi ses collaborateurs, notamment Charles Pellarin'. The text scandalized people and provoked the resignation of Carnot as minister. Renouvier recommended the abolition of interest on capital by means of credit institutions; to bring commerce and trade under the exclusive control of the government; and pleading for progressive taxation aiming at complete equality. - Stamp on title.‎

One of the two issues of the improved 1788 edition, enlarged with the 'Fragmens politiques', including a.o. 'Réflexions sur les droits des Etats Généraux, relativement à la concession des subsides'; 'De l'autorité des magistrats', etc. The book was first published in 1775 and almost immediately forbidden and suppressed. The work is cited as one of the most radical and serious attempts to maximalize the theory of Rousseau's Contrat Social and stating that nothing supercedes the social contract and the "general will." "Written in response to Chancellor Maupeou's attack on the parlements in 1771, the Catéchisme contained a radical statement of the doctrine of national sovereignty, not simply in the abstract terms of Rousseau's Contrat Social or the more congested historical formulations of the parlementary Maximes du droit public français, upon both of which it drew, but in the more immediate question-and-answer form of a political catechism offering a direct response to a precisely defined act of royal despotism, and culminating in a clear choice between revolution and the destruction of the political order. "Once one has read it, one is not surprised that the partisans of despotism have made such efforts to annihilate it," commented Pidansat de Mairobert in his Mémoires secrets. (...... As a result, copies of the 1775 edition are extremely rare.) Yet the interest of the work remains, not simply because it offered the most radical expression of the principle of national sovereignty, but also because it reappeared in 1787 and went through several editions in 1788 buttressed with additional fragments called forth by the events of the Pre-Revolution" (see: Keith M. Baker, "A classical republican in eighteenth-century Bordeaux: Guillaume-Joseph Saige" in: Inventing the French Revolution, Cambridge, 1990, pp. 128-151). - Slightly stained at blank upper margin throughout.‎

Second edition published in the same year as the original London edition, augmented, and published in pocket size for secret distribution in France. Victor Schoelcher (1804-1893), republican and author of the degree abolishing slavery in 1848. He visited the USA in 1829 and it was during his trip there that he became convinced that it was necessary to abolish slavery. During the first ten years of the July monarchy he worked for several journals such as the Revue Républicaine, the Revue indépendante, La Réforme, and others. He went again on a long voyage and upon his return prepared the degree abolishing slavery in the French colonies. He served in the garde nationale during the siege of Paris in 1870-1871 and sided with the democrates and socialists. The present work deals with the 'coup d'état' of 1851, and Schoelcher, together with Victor Hugo, Baudin and others attempted to rouse the old revolutionary district of the Faubourg Saint-Antoine against Louis Napoleon after the 'coup d'état'. The work was written during Schoelcher's exile in London. - Annotations on the front blank leaves and an ownership's entry reading 'Lucien Rodanet, 1877', the letters L.R. stamped in gilt at the foot of the spine.‎

Jean Joseph Thonissen (1816-1891), Belgian jurist and statesman. Thonissen became one of the most authoritative representatives in Belgium of the classical school of penal law, upholding the traditional conception of crime and punishment. From 1863 he was a member of the Chamber of Representatives and was affiliated with the conservative Catholic party. He was also interested in political and economic theory. The present works, later published again as Le Socialisme depuis l'antiquité, jusqu'à la constitution française du 14 janvier 1852, was inspired by the events of 1848, and revealed his antipathy to the theories of the socialists. It purported to be a history of socialistic ideas and movements, pointing out fallacies in doctrine and concluding that attempts to realize a communistic system brought devastation and anarchy. To offset socialist influence Thonissen demanded a program of social amelioration to be realized by the promotion of thrift, cooperation and professional training (Fernand Collin in ESS, 14, p. 621). Published by the 'Société pour l'émancipation intellectuelle'. Bound in are the all the original coloured covers for each of the three parts.‎

The work was seized immediately upon its publication and the author condemned to four months of imprisonment. The preface of the book, not signed, was done by Blanqui.Gustave Tridon, raised in a bourgouis family, moved to Paris and became adherant of Proudhon. He was condamned to prison for an article he wrote in Le Travail ('outrage à la morale publique et religieuse') and in prison he met Blanqui and became Blanquiste.‎

Want zang gaf moed, verbroederde en stampte de propagandaleuzen erin. Zingen is beter dan denken, beweerde een nazi-gezinde dichter zelfs. Tijdens de Tweede Wereldoorlog galmden overal in bezet Europa Duitse marsliederen door de straten. Op den duur kon zelfs menige antinazi 'Deutschland uber alles', het Horst Wessel-lied en 'Wir fahren gegen England' meezingen. De Nederlandse nationaal-socialisten lieten zich muzikaal evenmin onbetuigd. Vanaf het begin werd elke NSB-bijeenkomst afgesloten met het Wilhelmus. De Nederlandse zwarthemden zouden het zesde couplet zelfs tot het eind van de oorlog trots ten gehore brengen. Zij bouwden daarnaast via vaderlandse evergreens een eigen repertoire op van strijdliederen die de massa serieus moesten bewerken. De zangcultuur van de NSB is tot dusver niet onderzocht. Gerard Groeneveld is de eerste die de gewraakte teksten en melodieen bestudeert. Zo maakt hij duidelijk welke rol muziek binnen Musserts beweging speelde. Groeneveld volgt de ontstaansgeschiedenis van NSB-liederen, beschrijft de context waarbinnen ze werden gezongen en portretteert de bekendste componisten. Voor een indruk van deze gezwollen muziek is bij Zo zong de NSB een cd gevoegd met een representatieve selectie (26 nummers) uit de Duitse en de Nederlandse nationaal-socialistische liederenschat.‎

‎Aan het begin van de oorlog bezat ongeveer een op de tien van Hitlers soldaten een kleinbeeldcamera. En daarmee fotografeerden ze er lustig op los. Ze maakten soms aangrijpende beelden van de opmars door Nederland en richtten tijdens de bezetting hun lens op alles en iedereen van hun gading. In mei 1940 trokken ze massaal de grens over om Nederland voor hun Fuhrer bij het Duitse Rijk in te lijven. Maar naast een wapen hanteerde menig Wehrmachtsoldaat een fotocamera om wat hij zag en beleefde voor thuis vast te leggen. Amateurfotografie was in nazi-Duitsland uitgegroeid tot een ware rage. Vaak toeristische plaatjes, of illustraties van de dagelijkse militaire routine, maar een enkele keer onthulden ze verrassend hoe de Nederlandse bevolking met die vreemde overheersers omging. In Heinz in Holland is een intrigerende selectie van die authentieke kiekjes bijeengebracht door Gerard Groeneveld, specialist op het gebied van de mediageschiedenis van de Tweede Wereldoorlog.‎
