‎"La marche au pouvoir, dans les Etats totalitaires est toujours mystérieuse ; elle résulte des complots ourdis par des hommes qui se jalousent et se trompent plus ou moins cyniquement. Le régime communiste qui sévit en URSS, depuis plus d'un demi-siècle, est le témoignage le plus éclatant de ces luttes intestines, quelque secrètes qu'elles s'efforcent d'être. M. de Villemarest suit cette lutte pour le pouvoir pas à pas. Si Lénine a eu facilement raison du régime de Kerenski, on sait que c'est pour avoir prêché la capitulation sous certaines conditions devant l'Allemagne à ce moment victorieuse ; à sa mort, Staline a dû louvoyer plusieurs mois avant de recueillir une succession que Lénine ne lui réservait certainement pas. C'est trente ans après que les luttes s'enveniment et que l'auteur s'efforce d'en percer tous les détails et c'est surtout le rôle de Khrouchtchev qu'il met en vedette, dressant contre ce maître intrigant un véritable réquisitoire qui dans ce gros volume apparaît bien mérité. La mort, plus ou moins mystérieuse de Staline déclenche un Thermidor dont on ne peut s'étonner, mais la Terreur se poursuit sous le règne de Khrouchtchev ; les arrestations, les disparitions mystérieuses sont, au dire de M. de Villemarest, plus nombreuses après la disparition de Staline, mais la manière d'agir de celui qui, non sans difficulté d'ailleurs, lui a succédé est plus habile. La façon dont il se débarrasse du maréchal Joukov est un exemple typique de sa méthode. Ainsi au milieu d'intrigues continuelles, il se maintient au pouvoir pendant huit années. Brejnev, Kossiguine emploient contre lui les mêmes armes dont il s'est servi lui-même pour triompher. Cette étude se termine par d'intéressantes annexes rappelant l'organisation du pouvoir en URSS par des tableaux précis qu'on consultera avec profit."
