Durch die Vielzahl der Autoren aus unterschiedlichen Bereichen vor allem aus dem Institut für Denkmalpflege Arbeitsstelle Dresden der Technischen Universität Dresden dem Staatsarchiv Dresden und aus den Staatlichen Kunstsammlungen. Dresden die während der Vorbereitung von Ausstellung und Kolloquium Probleme erörtern und Meinungen austauschen konnten ist eine differenzierte und in mancher Hinsicht neue Betrachtung der barocken Baukunst in Sachsen erreicht worden besonders was Pöppelmanns Anteil an den architektonischen Leistungen dieser Zeit betrifft aber auch im Hinblick auf einzelne Bauten. Es sei hier nur erwähnt daß alle Autoren sich dankbar der Arbeit früherer Forscher bedient und im einzelnen jeweils dargelegt haben wo sie auf älteren Studien aufbauen und wo sie neue Ergebnisse einbringen konnten. Das Literaturverzeichnis läßt die Breite der wissenschaftlichen Beschäftigung mit sächsischem Barock ahnen besonders die letzten Jahre haben auf diesem Gebiet neue Impulse gebracht Kataloge Aufsätze und Bücher entstehen sehen. Sollen Namen genannt werden so muß man die frühen Publikationen von Hermann Hettner und Cornelius Gurlitt erwähnen dann von Bruno Alfred Döring und Hubert Georg Ermisch sprechen aus jüngerer Zeit Eberhard Hempel und Walter Hentschel Gerhard Franz und Sigfried Asche hervorheben ganz besonders aber Hermann Heckmann dessen Veröffentlichungen die Pöppelmann-Forschung seit 1954 geprägt haben. In dieser langen Reihe von Arbeiten soll das vorliegende Buch seinen Platz finden. Es stellt sich eine doppelte Aufgabe die aus der Entstehung im Zusammenhang mit der Ausstellung aber auch aus Absichten von Verlag und Herausgeber zu erklären ist: Wissensvermittlung und Einstimmung auf das Erlebnis barocker Kunst. Letzterem dient neben den Abbildungen besonders das einleitende Kapitel das mit Leben und Werk mit Ruhm und Nachruhm Pöppelmanns aber auch mit barocker Kunst in Dresden ganz allgemein bekanntmacht und das sich einerseits als besonderer Beitrag andererseits als Hinführung zu den Sachkapiteln versteht denn tatsächlich müssen sich Erlebnis und Wissen durchdringen und steigern soll das barocke Erbe seinen Platz als unverzichtbar.er Bestandteil im Kulturbewußt- sein der Gegenwart behaupten.
