MARX, KARL.
Herr Vogt. - MARX' STRUGGLE AGAINST DEFAMATION
London 1860. 8vo. Bound partly uncut with the original wrappers in a nice recent half calf pastiche binding with four rasied bands and gilt lettering to spine. Front wrapper with marginal repairs and back wrappers with repairs with minor loss of text. Light brownspotting to first and last leaves. A fine copy. VI 2 1-191 1 -errata pp.

The rare first edition of Marx' landmark defense against defamation a seminal work in his struggle for a new human society. Written in the midst of his writing of "The Capital" "Herr Vogt" constitutes the work that took precedence over this most important critique of political economy and the work that gives us one of the most profound insights into the mind of the great Marx. "Herr Vogt" is furthermore the work that we have to thank for the influence that "The Capital" and Marxist socialism did come to have upon our society. "In 1857 Karl Marx resumed work on his critique of political economy a process that culminated in the publication of "Capital" a decade later. He wrote a rough draft the "Grundrisse" in 1857 and 1858 parts of which he then reworked into the "Contribution to the Critique of Political Economy" which was published in June 1859. Then in 1861 through 1863 he wrote a revised draft of the whole of "Capital" which was followed by a more polished draft written during 1864 and 1865. Finally he revised the first volume yet again during 1866 and 1867. It appeared in September 1867.The careful reader will have noticed a rather lengthy gap in this chronology. From the second half of 1859 through 1860 Marx was not working on his critique of political economy. What was he doing instead What was so important so much more of an urgent priority than his theoretical workThe answer is that Marx was fighting back against Carl Vogt's defamatory attack. He fought back in order to defend his reputation and that of his "party." . " Herr Vogt" the book Marx wrote in order to set the record straight." Klimann Marx' Struggle Against Defamation.Vogt was a prominent radical German politician and materialist philosopher who had immigrated to Switzerland where he served in parliament and was also a professor of geology. His position on the 1859 war over Italian unification had a pro-French tilt which resulted in the publication of a newspaper article and an anonymous pamphlet that alleged correctly that Vogt was being paid by the French government. Vogt believed Marx to be the source of the allegation and the author of the pamphlet.Vogt fought back by attacking Marx. He published a short book that described Marx as the leader of a band of blackmailers who demanded payment in return for keeping quiet about their victims' revolutionary histories. The book also contained a number of false and harmful allegations against Marx and Vogt did everything in his power to destroy Marx' reputation. Not only did he attack Marx personally he also falsified facts and made up untrue allegations to libel the Communist League portraying its members as conspirators in secret contact with the police and accusing Marx of personal motives. There is no doubt that this work of slander put both Marx' own future as well as that of the Communist League at stake. "Ferdinand Lassalle warned Marx that Vogt's book "will do great harm to yourself and to the whole party for it relies in a deceptive way upon half-truths" and said that "something must be done" in response quoted in Rubel 1980 p. 53. Frederick Engels also urged Marx to respond quickly and he provided a good deal of assistance when Marx wrote "Herr Vogt".Carl Vogt and the circumstances that gave rise to his defamatory attack against Marx and his "party" are dead and gone. But "Herr Vogt" and Marx's battle against defamation remain living exemplars of how one responds in a genuinely Marx-ian way-i.e. the way of Marx. Do not separate theory from practice or philosophy from organization. Do not retreat to the ivory tower or suffer attacks in silence; set the record straight. Use the bourgeois courts if necessary. Enlist the assistance of others." Klimann."Marx's Herr Vogt almost entirely unknown in the English-speaking world. It is nevertheless one of the most brilliant of his writings. Engels considered it better than the Eighteenth Brumaire; Lassalle spoke of it as "a masterpiece in every respect"; Ryazanov thought that "in all literature there is no equal to this book"; Mehring rightly wrote of its "being highly instructive even today"." Karl Marx on Herr Vogt - from The New International Vol. X No. 8 August 1944 pp. 257-260. Transcribed & marked up by Einde O'Callaghan for ETOL. unknown

MARX, Karl.
Il Capitale di Carlo Marx brevemente compendiato da Carlo Cafiero.
Milan: C. Bignami e C 1879. First edition extremely scarce of Cafiero's abridgment of Marx's Das Kapital the first appearance of the work in Italian. This was one of the earliest abridgements of Das Kapital and was much admired by Marx. Carlo Cafiero 1846-1892 an Italian socialist met Marx and Engels in London in 1870 and was recruited to their cause. He returned to Italy accepting their offer to become the special agent in Italy of the International's General Council working especially in Naples where the Bakunists and Mazzinians held sway over the left. Engels tried to warn Cafiero about the dangerousness of Bakunin's ideas but by 1872 Cafiero had fallen in with Bakunin and was joining the anarchists. Imprisoned in 1877 "Cafiero read the French translation of Capital. The book electrified him with its brilliance and he immediately set about writing a commentary on it. By the time Cafiero left prison in August 1878 he had a short book ready for publication. The following February his old newspaper La Plebe began to publish instalments in Italian translation of the thirty-first chapter of Capital 'The Genesis of Industrial Capitalism' and in March the paper announced the imminent publication of a 'compendium' of the entire book. On 20 June 1879 Il Capitale di Carlo Marx appeared in print. Cafiero sent two copies of the Compendio to Marx in London. In an accompanying letter that began 'Stimatissimo Signore' Most Esteemed Sir he apologised for not letting Marx see the manuscript before publication. It had been his intention to do so but then a publisher had unexpectedly made him an offer. He explained to Marx: 'Fear of losing a favourable opportunity prompted me to consent to the proposed publication.' Cafiero closed with an expression of 'the deepest respect' for Marx and the hope that he had done right by Capital. Marx replied with high praise for Cafiero's book. Although Marx wrote to Cafiero in French he had made a serious study of Italian in his youth and read the language quite well. Most such summaries of his work Marx complained frustrated him with their superficiality misrepresentation and outright fabrications. Cafiero he continued had mastered almost all of his ideas. He had noticed only 'one apparent deficiency' in the Compendio: Cafiero had not addressed his argument about how 'the necessary material conditions for the emancipation of the proletariat are spontaneously generated by the development of capitalist exploitation.' Marx likewise tactfully ignoring the unpleasantness of 1872 encouraged Cafiero to return to the omitted theme in a future work of exegesis" Richard Drake Apostles and Agitators Italy's Marxist Revolutionary Tradition p. 30ff. Octavo 172 x 113 mm. Bound with the first Italian translation of J. S. Mill's The Subjection of Women in contemporary marbled boards roan leather spine ruled in blind direct lettered gilt edges sprinkled green and blue. Ownership inscription to each half title of Nicola de Berardini. Spine ends and corners lightly rubbed spine with a few spots of surface wear paper stock of Il Capitale lightly browned; a very good copy. Draper III p. 37; Sraffa 3862; Stammhammer I:44 cites a Milan edition published by Ambrosoli but according to de Vivo this is a ghost. OCLC and COPAC find copies at the British Library Friedrich Ebert Stiftung Karl Marx Haus and two copies in the Sraffa collection at Cambridge. hardcover

In Cyrillic: Manifest kommunisticeskoj partii.
Geneva: Volnaja Russkaja Tipografija 1882. By far and away the best of all the foreign language translations First complete Russian translation of the Communist Manifesto declared by Engels to be "by far and away the best of all the foreign language translations he knew" Andréas. Translated by Georgi Plekhanov with a new preface written in January 1882 by Marx and Engels as well as their preface to the edition of 1872 it was this translation that played an important role in the development of the Russian socialist movement. The original Russian translation of 1869 probably by Nechayev contained a number of serious mistakes and omitted several sections of the German original. Octavo 168 x 112 mm x 50 pp. Sometime separated into individual leaves now guarded in gutter re-sewn and bound in recent quarter blue morocco and blue-grey boards spine ruled and lettered in gilt. MARX, Karl.
Index librorum banning Das Kapital from Russian public libraries.
Saint Petersburg: Ministerstvo Vnutrennikh Del 1894. Marx's Kapital finally banned from Russian public libraries Extremely rare example of a Russian index librorum for public libraries recording the first - and rather late - attempt to censor the works of Marx listing the first two volumes of Das Kapital being the first edition of volume one in Russian 1872 and the first edition of volume two 1885. Scarce no other examples traced on WorldCat or KVK. "By an odd quirk of history the first foreign translation of Das Kapital to appear was the Russian which Petersburgers found in their bookshops early in April 1872. Giving his imprimatur the censor one Skuratov had written 'few people in Russia will read it and still fewer will understand it.' He was wrong; the edition of three thousand sold out quickly; and in 1880 Marx was writing to his friend F. A. Sorge that 'our success is still greater in Russia where Kapital is read and appreciated more than anywhere else'" PMM. As the worker's movement gained momentum it was decided to censor Kapital. This pamphlet based on a resolution dated 1 January 1894 selects works for removal and destruction from public libraries and reading rooms and was intended strictly for internal use; a printed note forbids further publications or other disclosure of any part of it. Among other famous works affected by this censor's ban are Tolstoy's Kreutzer Sonata in all editions translations of various works by Herbert Spencer John Stuart Mill Emile Zola and works on socialism such as The Eight Hours Day by Sidney Webb and Harold Cox. Also included was a translation of James Bryce The American Commonwealth. Octavo 242 x 168 mm. Original buff wrappers printed in black 16 pp. sewn. Previous ownership stamp of A. Martynov to title page in purple ink. Wrappers creased with some marks three small closed tears to extremities contents toned else a fresh copy of a fragile publication. See Printing and the Mind of Man 359 first edition of the first volume of Das Kapital. unknown
