In questo modo, anche i processi umani vengono rivisitati attraverso una chiave automatica e meccanica, in una riduzione dell'umano all'automatico. «Se è vero che in generale il fenomeno della macchina oggettiva sempre anche categorie proprie dell’autocomprensione umana, questo rispecchiamento, nell’ambito della modernità, diviene principio di un radicale autofraintendimento dell’uomo, che da luogo dei fini delle macchine, diviene egli stesso semplicemente una dinamica per niente finalizzata o finalizzata eteronomamente. E’ intorno a questo progetto di un’antropologia storica della tecnica che si snodano e si articolano, ognuno entro la sua propria prospettiva, i saggi qui raccolti: intorno al tentativo di recuperare la dimensione propriamente umana del cosmo delle macchine, seguendone le tracce non solo attraverso la storia delle idee, ma lungo la storia delle civiltà e fino alla primissima preistoria, per poi tornare a guardare la contemporaneità da una prospettiva più ampia e cercare così di dipanare nel suo senso e nelle loro tendenze i processi di ridefinizione dell’umano che vi hanno luogo.
