Marx Marcia with Hugo Hiriart and Robert Morgan
Marx Marcia
New York: Mexican Cultural Institute of New York 2002. Inscribed by the artist. Paperback. NF. Color-illustrated wraps; white lettering on front cover; no lettering on white spine. Parchment end papers. 32 pages with color images throughout. Catalogue from the exhibition. Includes an opening essay by Hugo Hiriart in English and Spanish an essay by Robert Morgan in English and Spanish and a brief narrative by the artist about her work English only. An array of paintings and sculpture in various media. The catalogue is inscribed to a former NY city gallery owner and signed by Marcia. A very scarce catalogue. "Marcia Marx 1931-2005 was an American artist. Born in Newark New Jersey she attended Yale School of Art and Columbia University. After completing her studies Marcia Marx moved to Mexico City where she lived for more than ten years and received much of her inspiration. Marx frequently painted "Felliniesque characters and impressions" in her works often using modernist techniques. "Blue Figures In The Studio" is one such example. As a "visual satirist" Marcia Marx's works paintings and sculptures showed a sense of the ridiculous and an eye for the bizarre and comedic elements in the human experience. Marx's works clearly reflected her strong mastery of medium and message. As an artist Marcia Marx was versatile with an assortment of media ranging from paints to clay and left the "storytelling" and interpretation to the public - "No matter what I was thinking when I created it the viewer writes his or her own script making it a far more intriguing experience" the artist once stated. She was the first woman to have a one-person show at the Instituto Nacional de Bellas Artes which Time magazine called a "smash hit". She was also one of six artists featured Cosmopolitan's article "Women Artists Today" which also included Georgia O'Keeffe and Louise Nevelson. Prior to her death on May 3 2005 in New York City after a two-year battle with cancer Marcia Marx participated in two major exhibitions. A highly successful retrospective of her art was held at the Mexican Cultural Institute of New York in 2002 which was documented by a well-written color catalog and her works were featured in a one-person show "An Interpretation of the Holocaust" at the Houston Holocaust Museum from October 2004-January 2005. When it was confirmed that Marcia Marx's works would be exhibited at the Houston Holocaust Museum the museum's executive director Susan Llanes-Myers exclaimed "We are so pleased to have Marcia Marx's art at out museum. Her work strikingly portrays a sense of remembrance a core of our mission." Art critic Donald Kuspit an art critic concurred stating that her works "have a disturbing poignancy not only because of their imagery but because of their intense physicality. Remembrance is Marx's theme. Her works are saturated in memory. unsettling as well as consoling." During her career Marcia Marx worked in Mexico City Israel Paris Rome and New York City. Her works have been exhibited around the world and are held in many private and public collections. Mexican Cultural Institute of New York paperback books

La Loïe Fuller
Paris: Les Cent Bibliophiles 1904. 4to cream wrappers with embossed design covering both covers in pink green and gilt. Professionally rebacked in compatible paper. Included is the contemporary marbled board portfolio into which the book had been bound presumably for the original owner Maurice Quarré a member of the French bibliophile with his bookplate laid in. With announcement from L'Estampe Originale listing this work as appearing next. Scattered minor foxing; a very pretty copy. Seventeen embossed designs in color "estampes modelées" by Pierre Roche. These are sculptural relief engravings apparently from plaster models according to Gordon Ray printed with touches of color in a process called gypsography. Roche a pupil of Rodin was a noted sculptor medallist and ceramist. This is the first use of relief illustrations in a book and the first use of Auriol Italique type which combine for a beautiful mise-en-page. This exquisite Art Nouveau book captures the celebrated American artiste whirling in here diaphanous veils lit by colored spotlights. Loïe opened her own special theater at the 1900 Paris World's Fair and called her performance "la danse serpentine." A vibrant homage to the dancer who fascinated the world and a bibliographic and technical tour de force. Ray The Art of the French Illustrated book p. 480. Illustrations can be found on my website by clicking on Catalogue 31 item 51. . Embossed Wrappers. Fine. Illus. by Pierre Roche. 4to. Les Cent Bibliophiles Paperback books

Broadway Portraits
New York: Donald Flamm Incorporated. Very Good. c.1929. First Edition. Hardcover. no dust jacket a little wear along the upper front joint small ink spot on rear cover. caricature sketches Brief one-page character sketches of various Broadway personalities each accompanied by a small caricature sketch of the subject. Many but not all of these are by Alex Gard. Among the fifty or so people thus profiled are: George M. Cohan David Belasco Florenz Ziegfeld Earl Carroll Walter Winchell Eugene O'Neill Lee and J.J. Shubert Alice Brady Texas Guinan Mark Hellinger Will Rogers the Marx Brothers "the Mae Wests of Musical Comedy" Mae West "A Marx Brother of the Drama" Beatrice Lillie Al Jolson Eddie Cantor Sylvia Sidney Willie and Eugene Howard W.C. Fields and Paul Whiteman. All the profiles are written rather weirdly as a single string of words with phrases set off by commas in place of periods. The author who soon decamped for Hollywood hired by Irving Thalberg as MGM's story editor explains this in his Foreword: "Although defiant to accepted grammatical rules it is a style that certainly helps fill the wide-open spaces of a page. Rest assured that you are getting your money's worth with every page. In order to understand it you simply have to forget every rule you ever learned about punctuation. Don't wait for a period to drop your voice or you will surely suffocate. After reading one or two aloud to your cronies I guess you should get the knack of it and like it." NOTE that this copy does not include the paste-on drawing by Alex Gard observed on the front covers of other examples. . Donald Flamm, Incorporated hardcover books
