Il volume ripercorre le interpretazioni che molti dei più grandi studiosi e filosofi del Novecento, marxisti e non marxisti, hanno dato del pensiero di Marx, alcuni criticandolo, altri proponendone delle letture originali e creative. Dopo aver ricostruito sinteticamente il modo in cui Benedetto Croce e Antonio Gramsci si sono confrontati con il materialismo storico, il testo si sofferma su tre grandi protagonisti della ripresa e della discussione critica del pensiero marxista nel Novecento: György Lukács con la sua teoria della reificazione, Theodor W. Adorno con le sue riflessioni sulla validità delle teorie di Marx nella società contemporanea e Jürgen Habermas con la sua attenzione alla dualità di lavoro e linguaggio come chiavi di lettura dell'evoluzione sociale. Due capitoli sono dedicati alla critica del marxismo da parte di Lucio Colletti e alla polemica sulla contraddizione tra questi ed Emanuele Severino. Nell'ambito del marxismo italiano vengono esaminate le tesi di Cesare Luporini, l'approccio storico-filosofico a Marx di Nicolao Merker e quello di Bruno Trentin, centrato sul tema dell'emancipazione del lavoro. Infine, un approfondimento è dedicato alla ricostruzione del marxismo proposta da Jacques Bidet, una delle voci più originali della discussione contemporanea.

Marx è l'"inventore del sintomo". Accostando la nozione di sintomo alla teoria del plusvalore, Lacan pone la pulsione e i suoi destini sul versante dei processi descritti nel Capitale. Per la psicoanalisi, metafora e ripetizione sono i due aspetti in cui il sintomo si presenta. La prima è legata all'emergere di un senso nascosto ma decifrabile, la seconda insiste su di un godimento impossibile ed opaco. Lacan interroga il marxismo sul suo destino oscillante tra una verità che annuncia di separarsi dalla filosofia ed un progetto che intende sovvertire il sociale; lo invita a ripensare l'uso della politica nel momento in cui l'universale del discorso politico mostra la sua funzione di ideologia; alla psicoanalisi domanda invece di sollevare il velo sull'impossibile che il soggetto reperisce come un sapere inconscio, inventando un uso del sintomo che arricchisca l'esperienza singolare. È possibile oggi una politica che resista al dominio delle scienze cognitive e alle strategie del controllo? È chiaro che pronunciare una domanda sugli effetti di verità dei discorsi di Marx e Lacan significhi anche verificare la solidità dei dispositivi predisposti alla loro neutralizzazione. Fitzgibbons - eventual President of Famous Players Theaters - with his "Approved" rubber stamp signed and dated "Oct. 15 - 1926" "Fitzgibbons" in pencil at top corner of ffep and the inked notation "from Mr. Harry Marx". Harry Marx worked in New York city as the General Director of Theatre Management for Publix Theatres Corporation from 1925 to 1929 later moving onto Los Angles to manage Grauman's Chinese Theatre. Screw-bound faux leather over boards 8vo 9 inches tall pp. 1 - blank vi 1-102 1 - blank "Revised and Reprinted 1926" printed at foot of title page illustrated w. "Publix Theaters" tailpieces. Volume with edge wear to spine ends and corners a tiny chip from upper edge of ffep some toning to text with occasional finger soil. An excellent copy with a nice industry association and quite likely the earliest obtainable copy extant. While Publix Employee Training Manuals from the 1930's have occasionally appeared in commerce we note just three copies sold at auction since 2008 - all from the 1930's copies from the 1920's remain a difficult and desirable find.
