MARX Karl.
Das Kapital in Russian: Kapital. Kritika politicheskoi ekonomii.
St Petersburg: Ministry of Communications A. Benke; III V. Demakov 1872 & 1885 & 1896. The first foreign translation of Capital extremely rare complete in three volumes 3 volumes large octavo. Vol. 1 240 x 157 mm contemporary half roan dark brown paper-covered boards rebacked spine unlettered new endpapers edges sprinkled. Vols. 2 241 x 160 mm and 3 240 x 150 mm both contemporary quarter roan and marbled paper-covered boards spines lettered in blind. Overall a very good set in contemporary bindings. Vol. 1: spine and extremities skilfully restored dampstain to top corner of book block some neat paper restoration using Japanese tissue to inner margin of pp. 93-94 contents faintly spotted and soiled. Vols. 2 and 3 worn at extremities else the contents clean and fresh with occasional light foxing. Vol. 2: with the imprint to the title leaf verso noted by Sraffa as appearing in some but not all copies. Sigs. 1 and 24.8 strengthened at gutter with paper strips a few tiny chips to fore edges of gathering 3 a short tear at bottom edge of rear free endpaper rear hinge cracked and held by two cords. Vol. 3: without the final blank. Front hinge cracked but firm Russian library stamps to front and rear pastedowns and to pp. 159 449 and 734 minor dampstain to bottom edge of last few gatherings. First edition in Russian of all three volumes of Das Kapital extremely rarely found complete. This was the first foreign translation of "the Bible of Marxism". Though the censors viewed its appearance complacently - "few people in Russia will read it and fewer still will understand it" - the first volume issued in 3000 copies was quite successful and the edition rapidly sold out with the first 900 copies sold in under two months. Marx thought the translation "masterly" and in 1880 wrote to his friend Friedrich Sorge his chief co-worker in America that "our success is still greater in Russia where Das Kapital is read and appreciated more than anywhere else." Marx had been closely involved in the process of creating an edition for Russian readers and corresponded often with the translators German Aleksandrovich Lopatin and Nikolai Frantsevich Danielson. Volume I went to the press in October 1871 Marx returned his proof corrections smartly at the start of November and the book was finally published on 27 March 1872. After Marx's death in 1883 when Engels was preparing the other volumes for publication in German they appeared in 1885 and 1894 respectively he sent advanced proofs of volume II to Danielson in February 1885 to help speed the translation and later in 1894 again sent proofs to Russia for translation. Unfortunately Engels did not see the work completed; he died in 1895 the year before the final volume appeared in St Petersburg. The printing of a second edition was forbidden in Russia and so in 1890 a New York publisher brought out an nearly identical reprint of the first edition: that second edition is distinguished from the first in that the misplaced comma opposite "p. 73" in the table of contents is replaced by a full stop; and the "e" at the end of l. 40 p. 65 is replaced by a "c". OCLC records the following four institutions as having copies of both volumes two and three: the International Institute of Social History in the Netherlands; BCU Dorigny in Switzerland; Bibliothek der Friedrich-Ebert-Stiftung in Germany; and the National Library of Poland. It locates a further single copy of volume three at the Universitatsbibliothek Osnabruck and complete sets of all three volumes at the National Diet Library in Japan and the British Library. Sraffa 3871 vol. II only. See Rubel 633n. St Petersburg: [Ministry of Communications (A. Benke); III, V. Demakov,] hardcover

MARX Karl.
Il Capitale di Carlo Marx brevemente compendiato da Carlo Cafiero.
Milan: C. Bignami e C 1879. Octavo 172 x 113 mm. Bound with the first Italian translation of J. S. Mill's The Subjection of Women in contemporary marbled boards roan leather spine ruled in blind direct lettered gilt edges sprinkled green and blue. Ownership inscription to each half title of Nicola de Berardini. Spine ends and corners lightly rubbed spine with a few spots of surface wear paper stock of Il Capitale lightly browned; a very good copy. First edition extremely scarce of Cafiero's abridgment of Marx's Das Kapital the first appearance of the work in Italian. This was one of the earliest abridgements of Das Kapital and was much admired by Marx. Carlo Cafiero 1846-1892 an Italian socialist met Marx and Engels in London in 1870 and was recruited to their cause. He returned to Italy accepting their offer to become the special agent in Italy of the International's General Council working especially in Naples where the Bakunists and Mazzinians held sway over the left. Engels tried to warn Cafiero about the dangerousness of Bakunin's ideas but by 1872 Cafiero had fallen in with Bakunin and was joining the anarchists. Imprisoned in 1877 "Cafiero read the French translation of Capital. The book electrified him with its brilliance and he immediately set about writing a commentary on it. By the time Cafiero left prison in August 1878 he had a short book ready for publication. The following February his old newspaper La Plebe began to publish instalments in Italian translation of the thirty-first chapter of Capital 'The Genesis of Industrial Capitalism' and in March the paper announced the imminent publication of a 'compendium' of the entire book. On 20 June 1879 Il Capitale di Carlo Marx appeared in print Â… Cafiero sent two copies of the Compendio to Marx in London. In an accompanying letter that began 'Stimatissimo Signore' Most Esteemed Sir he apologised for not letting Marx see the manuscript before publication. It had been his intention to do so but then a publisher had unexpectedly made him an offer. He explained to Marx: 'Fear of losing a favourable opportunity prompted me to consent to the proposed publication.' Cafiero closed with an expression of 'the deepest respect' for Marx and the hope that he had done right by Capital Â… Marx replied with high praise for Cafiero's book. Although Marx wrote to Cafiero in French he had made a serious study of Italian in his youth and read the language quite well. Most such summaries of his work Marx complained frustrated him with their superficiality misrepresentation and outright fabrications. Cafiero he continued had mastered almost all of his ideas. He had noticed only 'one apparent deficiency' in the Compendio: Cafiero had not addressed his argument about how 'the necessary material conditions for the emancipation of the proletariat are spontaneously generated by the development of capitalist exploitation.' Marx likewise tactfully ignoring the unpleasantness of 1872 encouraged Cafiero to return to the omitted theme in a future work of exegesis" Richard Drake Apostles and Agitators Italy's Marxist Revolutionary Tradition p. 30ff. Draper III p. 37; Sraffa 3862; Stammhammer I:44 cites a Milan edition published by Ambrosoli but according to de Vivo this is a ghost. OCLC and COPAC find copies at the British Library Friedrich Ebert Stiftung Karl Marx Haus and two copies in the Sraffa collection at Cambridge. Milan: C. Bignami e C, hardcover

MARX Karl.
Opere.
Rome: Luigi Mongini 1899-1902. Marx in Italian Octavo 240 x 164 mm. Contemporary quarter roan and pebbled cloth boards vellum corners spine ruled and direct lettered gilt. Spine lettered "Marx: Opere vol. I" with the ownership of M. Giua stamped at foot occasional pencil annotation. Joints cracked but firm neat repair to foot of spine and to inner hinges contents foxed the leaf edges slightly brittle with a few closed tears overall a very good copy. First edition a bound volume of 12 Italian translations of works by Marx issued by Luigi Mongini in parts each work separately paginated but continuously signed. "1899 would mark a further qualitative leap in the publication of Marx and Engels's texts in Italy reaching a particular peak in the years between 1899 and 1902. This was the most important attempt thus far to provide socialism and Italian culture with the greater part of the works by Marx and Engels that were then available. The publication in instalments of Marx Engels and Lassalle's Works later appearing as a collection thanks to the collaboration of important ancient historian Ettore Ciccotti and socialist publisher Luigi Mongini would doubtless represent 'Italian culture's only true and substantial approach to Marx … until after the Second World War'" Favilli pp. 213-4. Of the 12 translations present bound as listed below all but two are listed in Sraffa: those not are Rivelazioni sul processo dei Comunisti in Colonia 1900 and La guerra civile in Francia 1902. a MARX Carlo. Wrappers creased with some marks three small closed tears to extremities contents toned else a fresh copy of a fragile publication. Extremely rare example of a Russian index librorum for public libraries recording the first - and rather late - attempt to censor the works of Marx listing the first two volumes of Das Kapital being the first edition of volume one in Russian 1872 and the first edition of volume two 1885. Scarce no other examples traced on OCLC or KVK. "By an odd quirk of history the first foreign translation of Das Kapital to appear was the Russian which Petersburgers found in their bookshops early in April 1872. Giving his imprimatur the censor one Skuratov had written 'few people in Russia will read it and still fewer will understand it.' He was wrong; the edition of three thousand sold out quickly; and in 1880 Marx was writing to his friend F. A. Sorge that 'our success is still greater in Russia where Kapital is read and appreciated more than anywhere else'" PMM. As the worker's movement gained momentum it was decided to censor Kapital. This pamphlet based on a resolution dated 1 January 1894 selects works for removal and destruction from public libraries and reading rooms and was intended strictly for internal use; a printed note forbids further publications or other disclosure of any part of it. Among other famous works affected by this censor's ban are Tolstoy's Kreutzer Sonata in all editions translations of various works by Herbert Spencer John Stuart Mill Emile Zola and works on socialism such as The Eight Hours Day by Sidney Webb and Harold Cox. Also included was a translation of James Bryce The American Commonwealth. See Printing and the Mind of Man 359 first edition of the first volume of Das Kapital. Das Kapital in Polish: Kapital.
Warsaw: Nakladem Spóldzielni Ksiegarskiej Ksiazka 1926-9. 3 volumes octavo. Vol. 1 in original paper wrappers printed in black; vols. 2 and 3 in contemporary half cloth with marbled boards number 95 printed in black to spine of vol. 2 front wrapper of vol. 2 bound in. Housed in a black cloth solander box. Vol. 1 with neat repair to edges of wrappers and backstrip; private ownership stamp to title of Volume 1. Wrappers of vol. 1 slightly soiled and dog-eared boards of vol. 2 rubbed the occasional faint spot or finger mark to contents. A very good copy. Extremely rare second first 1884 Polish edition of Das Kapital a new and thorough though anonymous translation; the planned second volume never appeared overtaken by events in the middle of the 20th century. This edition reprints the usual prefaces including the one of the first Polish edition but there is no new preface to this edition which was carefully typeset and printed on high-quality paper. This new translation on which a team of economists and Marxists worked for years introduces modern Marxist terminology into the Polish language. The translators and editors were Henryk Lauer Mieczyslaw Kwiatkowski Jerzy Heryng and Lidwig Selen. Henry Lauer real name Ernest Brand had been a member of the Polish Communist Party CPP since 1919 and later worked in the Soviet Union where the Stalinists shot him in 1937. We can locate a single copy only at the Polish National Library in Warsaw identical collation. Warsaw: Nakladem Spóldzielni Ksiegarskiej Ksiazka, hardcover

MARX Karl.
Kapitalen.
Copenhagen: N. Cohens Bogtrykkeri 1885 & 1887. Capital in Danish 2 volumes in 1 quarto. Modern red buckram spine lettered in gilt top edge sprinkled black. Without the half-titles "Socialistisk Bibliotek Vol. IV-V". Previous ownership inscription in blue ink to front free endpaper with the quotation "The expropriators are expropriated. p. 462 I" inscribed underneath in red ink; library stamp to vol. 2 p. 1. Spine slightly faded ends a little bruised and rubbed contents evenly browned with some chipping to page edges as usual due to paper quality front and rear gutters and several page edges neatly reinforced using Japanese tissue overall a very good clean copy of a fragile publication. First edition in Danish of Das Kapital. Marx's seminal work first appeared in German in 1867 and the first translation of the work was that into Russian 1872. The first English translation appeared after the Danish in 1887. "The history of the twentieth century is Marx's legacy. Stalin Mao Che Castro — the icons and monsters of the modern age have all presented themselves as his heirs. Whether he would recognise them as such is quite another matter … Nevertheless within one hundred years of his death half the world's population was ruled by governments that professed Marxism to be their guiding faith. His ideas have transformed the study of economics history geography sociology and literature. Not since Jesus Christ has an obscure pauper inspired such global devotion — or been so calamitously misinterpreted" Francis Wheen in his introduction to Karl Marx 1999.
