The leader of LSDSP, Pauls Kalnin, was the speaker of Latvian parliament from 1925 to 1934. The party itself, however, would often be in opposition because of many smaller right-wing parties forming coalition governments, typically led by the Latvian Farmers' Union. Molti conoscono Guido Picelli come l’animatore delle «Barricate di Parma» del 1922, quando al comando dei suoi Arditi del popolo guidò la vittoriosa resistenza dei rioni proletari contro migliaia di fascisti. Fu quello l’episodio più eclatante della sua vita, quello che lo rese noto ben oltre i confini della sua città. Eppure la sua esistenza fu segnata da molte altre battaglie. Dopo la Grande guerra fu un dirigente del Partito socialista e poi di quello comunista. Deputato dal 1921 al 1926, venne perseguitato durante il regime fascista. Fuggito all’estero, si rifugiò in Unione sovietica da dove, nel settembre 1936, si diresse in Spagna per combattere nelle Brigate internazionali. Morì, sul fronte di Madrid, nei primi giorni del 1937, mentre guidata i suoi uomini in battaglia. Di Picelli sono stati messi in risalto il carisma di dirigente e le abilità di uomo d’azione ma poco è stato studiato il suo percorso politico e intellettuale. In questa edizione critica dei suoi scritti e discorsi parlamentari, per la prima volta emerge con completezza il suo pensiero, segnato dalla radicale opposizione alle classi dominanti, tanto in età liberale quanto in quella fascista. Una concezione coerente con il suo modo di vivere, con il suo essere rivoluzionario, con la lotta come «sua divisa». Rileggerne i testi è il modo migliore per sottrarlo a quella distorsione politica che è stata fatta della sua figura e per restituirle lo spessore umano e intellettuale che ebbe. A cura di William Gambetta. Il volume è edito grazie a una collaborazione tra il Comitato agosto 1922, il Centro studi movimenti di Parma e la Biblioteca Franco Serantini Istituto di storia sociale, della Resistenza e dell'età contemporanea della provincia di Pisa.
