Salaries listed from $2498 to $3351 for teachers and up to $2927 for teacher-advisors. Includes detailed qualifications by subject and grade level requirements for teaching in boarding schools and physical and moral qualifications. Positions were heavily concentrated in Western states and designed for rural isolated settings often requiring teachers to be "sympathetic to Indian culture" but also to enforce assimilationist curricula. The announcement specifies that teachers must possess "a real appreciation of the Indian viewpoint and Indian culture including native arts and crafts" even as it promotes instruction in "the language of the 'Stars and Stripes.'"<br /> <br /> 2 United States Civil Service Commission. DeHuff’s address "How Shall We Educate the Indian" delivered to the Round Table of Indian Service Teachers at Northern Arizona Normal School July 1922. DeHuff Superintendent of the Santa Fe Indian School advocates for English-language immersion and the erasure of Native languages declaring that "the Indian must be transformed at the very earliest possible date into an English speaking and understanding individual." He dismisses bilingualism and asserts that Indigenous people must "visualize their own English" and be made to "jerk in their unwillingly" to the American school system. While acknowledging Native agricultural knowledge he asserts the necessity of vocational training over intellectual development: "To make farmers out of the Indian boys better cooks and better housekeepers of the girls." Reflects the curricular use of Native oral traditions within Bureau of Indian Affairs BIA schools filtered through anthropological and often appropriative frameworks.
