PARLIAMENT OF NEW ZEALAND
Collection of 17 reports concerning the Maori Wars Land Settlements and the Administration of Sir George Grey
Auckland: Government printer 1861 1865. Very good condition. Foolscap folio some tables and a coloured folding map occasional foxing and browning occasional contemporary notes and marginalia in ink; bound in later quarter polished calf with labels. An engaging collection of 17 official reports and papers dating from Sir George Grey's second term as Governor of New Zealand a formative period for European-Maori relations in New Zealand's history. Grey had been recalled after a controversial tenure as governor of the Cape Colony and High Commissioner of South Africa. An able self-promoter Grey had offered to return in the hope that his rapport with the Maori would enable him to quell the emerging troubles and took little time in maligning the efforts of his predecessor Thomas Gore Brown. Grey was an able negotiator but his intentions were suspected both by the Maori and the British commander Lieutenant-General Duncan Cameron who acted with great caution following his efforts to defeat the Maori in southern Taranaki. Cameron whose report On the Native Insurrection is included here suspected Grey and the government of trying to use the British Army to acquire Maori land. On one occasion at Weraroa Grey took to the field himself and with a small force of colonial troops and 'friendly' Maori captured a native supply depot which the Maori promptly evacuated. This was hailed not least by Grey as a famous victory. The papers collected here begin with the Auckland printed Native Addresses of Welcome continuing with Reports on the state of Maori relations and finish with Wellington published Papers on The supply of ammunition to rebel natives and Murder of the Rev. Carl Sylvius Volkner by the Hau Hau Fanatics with page references of the Maori-translated passages in an early hand. Of special interest is the folding coloured map showing the proposed system of roads and settlements for military defence of the North Island included as an integral part of the report titled Memorandum on Roads and Military Settlements in the Northern Island 1863. A full listing of contents in order of binding in this volume: Native Addresses of Welcome to Sir George Grey. Ngatiraukawa and Ngatitoa Tribes. Published Auckland 1861; 14pp. BALNEAVIS Adj.-Gen. Melbourne: John Ferres Government Printer 1862. Very good. Foolscap folio single sheet. Requests that Alfred Howitt and his men comprising the Victorian Relief Expedition stay in the field to effect a continental crossing having traversed inland to Cooper's Creek charged with retreiving the bodies of Burke and Wills. The petition reads: 'a very small additional outlay would render it able to maintain many months longer in the field; and that the traverse of the region lying between Cooper's Creek and Swan River by the discoveries it would effectuate would be most beneficial and highly redound to the honour of this colony'. PARLIAMENT OF GREAT BRITAIN LIGHT William; FINNISS Boyle Travers and others
First Annual Report of the Colonization Commissioners of South Australia to His Majesty's Principal Secretary of State For the Colonies 1836
London: House of Commons 28 July 1836. Tall quarto 40pp. with handcoloured lithographed sheet; bound in splendid full crimson crushed morocco with gilt lettering by Sangorski & Sutcliffe. A significant publication in the early history of South Australia being the first report of the Colonization Commission tasked with selling land in the infant colony to provide the capital for colonial development. The sale of land in South Australia owed much to the 'science of colonial management' propounded by Edward Wakefield Gibbon and within a decade was confounded with difficulty as the colony accrued massive debt from the British government. This report publishes important correspondence relating to the early survey including the letters of instruction to Surveyor-General William Light and his assistants including Boyle Travers Finniss. The lithographed map by Arrowsmith is titled "Part of Southern Australia from the 132 to 141 degree of East Longitude". From the library of Dr. Robert Edwards AO in a remarkably bold and handsome binding by master English bookbinders Sangorski and Sutcliffe. House of Commons, 28 July unknown
