A rich source of primary information on the early exploration and settlement of North Australia printing despatches and correspondence from the Government Resident J.T. Manton explorer John McKinlay surveyor R.H Edmunds and others. Of particular interest is the publication of the journal of Clement Young described as 'clerk and accountant' covering the period November 1865 to July of the following year. It contains much detail of contact with local Aboriginal tribes the progress of McKinlay and the myriad challenges of landing and keeping stock in the tropics. Government printer unknown
Adelaide: Government printer 1869. Foolscap folio single leaf fine. Official publication of the petition presented to parliament by Boyle Travers Finniss following his dismissal as administrator of the fledgling Adam Bay settlement in Northern Australia during 1863. Following the decision to place the Northern Territory under South Australian jurisdiction in 1863 Finniss was appointed resident and embarked on the project of establishing a settlement at Adam Bay. A surveyor by profession Finniss had previously worked with Colonel William Light in laying out the city of Adelaide. Finniss came under fire for the poor siting of the settlement that flooded during the monsoon and was criticised by settlers for poor management. In this petition Finniss states his significant personal financial sacrifices in taking on the job and requests compensation of some £1000. Government printer unknown

Melbourne: John Ferres Government Printer 1862. Title-page a little stained otherwise a good uncut example. Foolscap folio 104 pp. printed on light blue paper edges uncut; half calf. Official report of the Royal Commission appointed to investigate the Burke and Wills disaster: 'now very scarce and of high interest' Australian Rare Books. When news of the tragedy reached Melbourne public interest in the affair reached near hysterical proportions and a Royal Commission had been set up even before King returned to Melbourne. The commissioners apportioned blame for the debacle three ways: the expedition's over-enthusiastic some would say incompetent leader Robert O'Hara Burke; the careless overseer William Wright; and the indecisive Exploration Committee of the Royal Society of Victoria. Although it concluded that Wright appeared 'to have been reprehensible in the highest degree' Burke was also chastised for displaying 'a far greater amount of zeal than prudence.overtaxing the powers of his party' and also for his failure to keep a regular journal. The appendices of this report totalling some 28 pages are of great historical interest as they print Burke's instructions from the Exploration Committee numerous despatches from Wright and Burke a good part of the journals of Wright and Wills the narrative of John King and William Brahe's report of June 1861. This Act clarifies the process of paying out prize monies stipulating that the Commissioners of the Board of Longitude are to pass on the particulars of any individual deemed worthy to the Commissioners of the Navy who in due course instruct the Naval treasurer to issue a bill of payment. This process is limited to the disbursement of sums up to £2000: greater amounts required parliamentary approval. Mark Baskett unknown
London: Mark Baskett 1762. Folio title pp. 675-678; disbound yet fine. This Act empowers the Commissioners of Longitude power to expend sums up to £2000 on experimental projects. As such it significantly expands the scope of the Board to rigorously test plausible proposals from a wide range of applicants. This large experimental budget accommodated the Jamaica trial of Harrison's chronometer while providing widespread impetus to other contenders. The language of the Act reflects contemporary confidence in the capacity of science to overcome the age-old riddle: 'there is great reason to expect that by continuing to encourage ingenious Persons to invent and make further improvements and experiments in order to discover the said Longitude such discoveries may at length be produced and as will effectively answer that end and thereby contribute very much to the advantage of the Trade and Honour of this Kingdom.'.
