Tring England : The Zoological Museum 1894. Volume I. Complete in five Issues published January April July September December 1894. NEAR FINE. Each issue separate bound in original wrapper; pages uncut. Lionel Walter 2nd Baron Rothschild published 'Novitates Zoologicae' for his private zoological collection at Tring which opened to the public in 1892. The Baron's wealth allowed for more luxurious color reproduction than the norm for journals of that time and the quality of the color plates is superb. Copies of the journal are now scarce particularly this First Volume. The set is Near Fine pages clean unmarked and uncut; bound in original light blue paper wrappers titled in black on front. Trim size is 7-3/4 x 11-1/4". ISSUE NO. 1: Plates I - IV include 3 beautifully printed chromolithographs 2 of birds and 1 B&W halftone reproduction. All are tissue protected. A bound in slip states that Plates V through X will appear in Part II. Wrapper is lightly edgeworn with some tears and small chips to rear panel a few small archival tape repairs and bottom rear corner chipped. Binding firm sewn signatures. 266 pages. ISSUE NO. 2: Includes 6 tissue protected chromolithographs Plates V - X bound at back of issue: 3 of moths 3 of beetles. The wrapper is lightly toned and edgeworn with some tears and small chips to rear panel a few small archival tape repairs and bottom rear corner chipped. Pages 267-570. ISSUE NO. 3: only 2 articles in this issue no artwork. Wrapper is fine no tears or chips. Pages 571-590. ISSUE No. 4: a larger issue with 15 articles and 5 tissue protected plates XI - XV 1 B&W photograph of a tortoise Testudo Indicia and 4 chromolithographs: butterflies beetles Propithecus Majori Roths. and plate with 2 birds Dysithamnus and Eupsychortyx. The wrapper has a large chunk out of the middle front 5 inches long and extending 2 inches in from the thumb edge; the reverse side Contents has suffered some loss of type. Pages 591-684.
