‎New York: Lippincott 1926. Book. Good. Hardcover. 1st Edition. Gold covers slightly dirty with awkward stains on rear and chewed lower spine also slightly bent 1st edn. Upward was a poet lawyer politician and teacher. In 1908 he self-published a book he apparently thought would be Nobel Prize material: The New Word. He shot himself in November 1926 reportedly after hearing of George Bernard Shaw's Nobel Prize award but maybe because this book didn't do as well as he would have liked. But that is my speculation. Still how many books could you buy which was written hours before the author killed himself The Club of Masks is one of his international spy series. Lippincott Hardcover‎

‎Salt Lake City UT: Office of the Chief Police 1921. Wanted poster 26 cm x 18 cm Age toning with a small contemporary ink stamp from the Salt Lake Police. Attractively matted and framed. The two suspects are identified as Paul Murray - alias - E.B. Williamson and Howard Harber. This poster contains a mug shot of Murray. Murray is described as "Age 23 h 5 ft 8 in. weight 130 lbs. complexion florid hair red eyes blue teeth good nativity Georgia occupation chauffeur has scar under left eye." Harber is described as "Hair brown eyes dark height 6 ft. 2 1/2 in. weight 158 lbs. 21 yrs. old nativity Queensland Australia occupation bridgeman complexion ruddy build slender has scar on right upper left." The Salt Lake Telegram of September 6 1921 wrote: "The Robbery of Beck's Hot Springs took place last night at 8:20 o'clock. When five masked men quietly and systematically secured envelopes and cash belonging to the bathers to the extent of $1000. Bathers were compelled to look on while the robbers looted to the checkroom and cash register. The telephone was torn from the wall in order that no alarm could be given. Three of the bandits entered the office while the two others waited outside in the machine. Thirty-five envelopes containing the money and valuable of the bathers were gathered together and thrust into a Boston bag belonging to P.T. Boise manager of the Springs." The text below Murray's mug shot states: "On the evening of September 5th 1921 Beck's Hot Springs a bathing Resort near here was held up by five men two being apprehended and three still out. Two of the three men out have been identified and FELONY COMPLAINTS AND WARRANTS have been issued against them. Please FILE THESE FINGER PRINTS in your bureau and should you apprehend either of these men hold and wire at our expense and an officer with proper papers will come for them." The third man was later identified as John Doe Brown - alias - John Carr. The three would steal a car in Denver and later they would surface in Oklahoma. Although Utah authorities would press for their extradition they were charged in Federal court. The Salt Lake Telegram for November 21 1921 wrote: " Assistant United States District attorney David H. Cannon has requested the Oklahoma federal authorities to hold the three alleged Beck's Hot Springs bandits for Salt Lake. The man are Paul Murray Howard Harber and John Carr. They are held in Oklahoma under the Dyer motor vehicles act." These three would never spend anytime in Utah jails for this crime. Office of the Chief Police unknown‎

Title page has an 1834 ink name in upper corner and a crease to lower inner corner; text paper a little yellowed; a couple small dark spots to pp 101-04; a few small dark spots to last leaf; near fine text clean and unworn externally fine. >>> Sir Henry Vane the younger a devout Puritan emigrated to Massachusetts in 1635 and was elected Governor in 1636. An advocate of religious tolerance his single term as Governor was not a successful one - he engaged the colony in war with the Pequots for one thing - but he was instrumental in the founding of Harvard College and he was also a supporter of Roger Williams and the foundation of Rhode Island. Sir Harry returned to England in 1637 now more radical and anti-clerical becoming a member of the Short and Long Parliaments and advocating for the separation of church and state. After the fall of Cromwell and the Restoration Vane was granted clemency for his part in the Glorious Revolution but it was overturned. He stood trial for high treason and as was the custom of the time was forced to defend himself without benefit of counsel. The court was packed with Royalists and he was convicted and subsequently beheaded on Tower Hill. Samuel Pepys was present and wrote "He made a long speech many times interrupted by the Sheriff and others there; and they would have taken his paper out of his hand but he would not let it go. But they caused all the books of those that writ after him to be given the Sheriff; and the trumpets were brought under the scaffold that he might not be heard. Then he prayed and so fitted himself and received the blow; but the scaffold was so crowded that we could not see it done.He had a blister or issue upon his neck which he desired them not hurt: he changed not his colour or speech to the last but died justifying himself and the cause he had stood for; and spoke very confidently of his being presently at the right hand of Christ; and in all things appeared the most resolved man that ever died in that manner and showed more of heat than cowardize but yet with all humility and gravity. One asked him why he did not pray for the King. He answered 'Nay' says he 'you shall see I can pray for the King: I pray God bless him !" Lowndes says "THE TRYAL was written by a Sectarist in favor of Vane and printed by stealth."
