WITHOUT LAWFUL AUTHORITY: A Tommy Hambledon Novel Rue Morgue Vintage Mystery
Boulder CO U.S.A.: Rue Morgue Press 2008. 1st printing originally pub in 1943. A fine unread copy of the trade paperback. Two safecrackers lend British agent Tommy Hambledon a hand in sussing out Nazi spies and dealing with the rather odd residents of a mental hospital. After Jim Wamford is found guilty of selling secrets to the enemy and discharged from his regiment he's very much at loose ends-that is until he meets John Marden a professional safe-cracker who is nonetheless a gentleman and a very pleasant one at that despite the fact that he was trying to break into Wamford's own safe when they met. The two become fast friends and unite in a common purpose to find the fellow officer who framed Wamford and to round up the German spies who stole his secrets. In the course oftheir activities they keep nearly crossing paths with Tommy Hambledon of British Intelligence who's just back in England after a long sojourn in Germany. As delighted as he is with their little presents to him he's very anxious to meet them in person but they prove to be a most elusive pair. Set in 1938 with war with Germany just around the comer it's the fourth book in the Tommy Hambledon series and one oft he best with an almost perfect blend of straightforward counterespionage and farcical humor. DRINK TO YESTERDAY A Rue Morgue Vintage Mystery
Boulder CO U.S.A.: Rue Morgue Press 2008. 1st prtg. A fine unread copy of this trade paperback. The first of two books in what famed critic Anthony Boucher called "a single long and magnificent novel of drama intrigue and humor." When Drink to Yesterday first appeared in Britain in 1940 and in the U.S. in 1941 it was immediately heralded as a departure from the fanciful spy-and- intrigue novels that preceded it. Gone were complicated passwords deadly dames in black velvet and dashing aristocratic secret agents. Here instead was what Howard Haycraft the genre's first historian termed "a mood of subtle understatement" calling Drink to Yesterday and its immediate sequel A Toast to Tomorrow "superior" examples of this revamped genre. Drink to Yesterday was based on the early life of one of its two collaborators Cyril Henry Coles who left school lied about his age and enlisted as a teenager in the British army during World War I. He was transferred to intelligence when his remarkable aptitude for conversational German was noticed and he became the youngest member of Britain's Foreign Intelligence Office later MI6. Like Bill Saunders of the book Coles spent much of the rest of war working behind enemy lines. Coles and his collaborator a Hampshire neighbor Adelaide Oke Manning chose to cast his story in the form of the novel so as not to run afoul of the Official Secrets Act. Grimmer than later books in the series it's also an ingenious circular story of murder enlived by the sardonic humor of Bill 's mentor and fellow agent Tommy Hambledon. . 1st Prtg. Pictorial Wrappers. As New. Illus. by Pudim Rob. Trade Paperback. Rue Morgue Press Paperback
