Part II.' 6pp. 4to. Both volumes mainly consist of dated genealogical information with the source often given e.g. 'Reg. Mag.' 'Argyll Charters' 'Register at Taymouth' 'Origines Parochiales' 'Highland Papers' 'Services of Heirs' 'Register Privy Council' 'Argyll Register of Inventories' 'Commissariot of Argyll' 'Coll. de Rebus Alba' 'Commissariot of Dunblane' 'Balquhidder Baptism Register' and 'Stone in Grave-yard at St Fillans Chapel'. There are records of a number of works on highland genealogy by Tod but the only record on COPAC is of 'The Clan MacNicol' at the National Library of Scotland. In de 17de eeuw al verzamelde Jacob Kerchof (1625-1685) de stambomen van 1200 families uit de Zuidelijke Nederlanden. De Openbare Bibliotheek Brugge kocht de verzameling eind 2014 aan. De schitterend ingekleurde manuscripten bevatten heel wat genealogische informatie, maar toont toch ook vooral hoe een genealoog in de 17de eeuw te werk ging. J.A. Kerchof werd in 1625 in Brugge geboren en verbleef er ook het grootste deel van zijn leven. In 1654 werd hij kapelaan van de Onze-Lieve-Vrouwekerk, waar hij zich wijdde aan genealogie (familiekunde) en heraldiek (wapenkunde). Zijn jarenlange genealogische onderzoek over ?notabele? families in Brugge en de Zuidelijke Nederlanden resulteerde in een select aantal handschriften dat nooit in druk werd uitgegeven. De verzameling bestaat uit ca. 1200 losse bifolia. Een bifolium is een vel papier, in dit geval van groot formaat, dat op de langse zijde eenmaal wordt gevouwen zodat er telkens twee bladen (folio?s) of vier bladzijden zijn. Elk bifolium is gewijd aan een familie. Voor families waar meer gegevens beschikbaar waren, werd een tweede of zelfs een derde bifolium aangemaakt die vervolgens in elkaar werden geschoven. Jacobus Kerchof ging systematisch te werk: hij schreef de familienaam met wapenschild en korte beschrijving telkens op een vaste plaats. De verschillende generaties noteerde hij in kolommen, waarbij opvalt dat de meest recente gegevens niet in de rechterkolom terechtkwamen en dat Kerchof dus ruimte voorzag om de genealogieen aan te vullen (ook na zijn eigen dood). De laatste bladzijde was telkens gereserveerd voor ?annotations?: losse aantekeningen van naamdragers die niet in de genealogie pasten, wetenswaardigheden en de gebruikte bronnen, vooral (Brugse) kerkarchieven en graf(gedenk)stenen in kerken en kapellen. Na Kerchofs dood werd zijn werk verder aangevuld, weliswaar niet in de ruimte die hij daarvoor voorzien had, maar wel door losse bladen in te voegen. Dat gebeurde overwegend in de 18de eeuw door de Brugse kunstenaar en kroniekschrijver Pieter Le Doulx (1730-1807). De meest in het oog springende aanvullingen bestaan uit losse documenten die op een of andere manier verband houden met de familie: laatmiddeleeuwse oorkonden, kleine ontvangstbewijzen, 17de-eeuws drukwerk, maar even goed 19de-eeuws materiaal. Uit onderzoek blijkt evenwel dat er niet alleen aanvullingen waren, maar dat er doorheen de jaren ook gegevens verloren zijn gegaan. Waarschijnlijk telde de verzameling oorspronkelijk meer dan 1400 bifolia. De waarde van de verzameling beperkt zich niet tot de genealogische informatie die ze bevat. De verzameling toont vooral ook hoe een van de vroegste Brugse genealogen onderzoek deed binnen een ruim, zelfs internationaal netwerk en is in die zin een bijzondere bron voor de studie van kennissystemen in het verleden: hoe werd informatie vastgelegd, geordend, uitgebreid en toegankelijk gemaakt
