Federico II. La guerra, le città e l'impero
ril. Federico II di Svevia, re di Sicilia e imperatore del Sacro Romano Impero, è sicuramente una delle figure più importanti e note del Medioevo. Su di lui sono fiorite leggende e miti e a lui sono state dedicate corpose biografie che ne hanno privilegiato ora un aspetto ora un altro, finendo per darne un ritratto spesso parziale o contraddittorio: uomo «moderno» e «meraviglia del mondo» (stupor mundi) per alcuni, principe medievale nel solco dei suoi predecessori, per gli altri. Sotto certi aspetti si presentò come uomo spregiudicato, culturalmente versatile e aperto alla scienza e all'arte, ma sotto altri aveva una concezione del mondo e del potere molto tradizionale, legata all'idea universalistica e sacrale dell'Impero. Sarà proprio quest'ultimo aspetto a spingere lo Svevo a intraprendere un'interminabile guerra per ristabilire il suo primato sui Comuni ribelli dell'Italia settentrionale, guidati da Milano, supportati dal papa e fermamente decisi a difendere quell'autonomia strappata nel 1183, con la pace di Costanza, a Federico Barbarossa. Una guerra feroce, durata ben quindici anni, dal 1236 al 1250, che ha visto vittorie più o meno effimere, voltafaccia improvvisi e brucianti sconfitte, ha assorbito quasi tutte le energie dell'imperatore, drenato gran parte delle ricchezze del Regno di Sicilia e dissanguato lo stesso nemico. Una guerra che, tuttavia, non è mai stata adeguatamente ricostruita. Con questo volume, Paolo Grillo si propone di dedicarle l'attenzione dovuta, e lo fa con una narrazione «in presa diretta», che consente al lettore, come davanti a un vivace e colorato affresco, di rivivere, passo dopo passo, le incertezze, gli eroismi, gli orrori e le miserie di uno dei più importanti, poco conosciuti e spesso spietati conflitti medievali. Perché, se la grandezza di Federico è innegabile, riflette Grillo, il suo progetto universalistico, tanto ostinatamente e vanamente perseguito, ha comportato un «prezzo di sangue, di distruzione e di odio altissimo per l'Italia intera».
