This personal name owed its popularity in the Middle Ages chiefly to St. Benedict circa 480 - 550 who founded the Benedictine order of monks at Monte Cassino and wrote a monastic rule that formed a model for all subsequent rules. There were many versions of the name throughout Europe and in England in the 12th Century the Latin form of the name can be found alongside versions derived from the Old French forms "Beneit" and "Benoit" which were popular among the Normans. The surname dates back to the early 13th Century see below. London Church Records list the christening of Dennys Bennett on June 15th 1567 at St. Mary at Hill and the christening of Thomas Bennit on December 1st 1583 at St. John's Hackney. One John Bennett was an early emigrant to the New World; he is recorded as sailing in the "Plaine Joan" from London in May 1635 bound for Virginia.</p><p>A Coat of Arms granted to a Bennett family is silver a chevron between three red lions' heads erased. The first recorded spelling of the family name is shown to be that of William Benet which was dated 1208 in the "Charter Rolls of Durham" during the reign of King John known as "Lackland" 1199 - 1216. Surnames became necessary when governments introduced personal taxation. In England this was known as Poll Tax. Instead of a detailed genealogical history of the Moore clan the book consists mostly of introductory pages of general history info on life in the Old World and immigration to America and a MOORE INTERNATIONAL REGISTRY many pages of names and addresses probably harvested by computer from telephone directories electoral rolls automobile registrations and cross street directories. There is a section on the Moore Family Coat of Arms and a few pages probably superficial on Moore heraldry with some general tips on how to do genealogical research. There are a few sections that could be of value to Moore's researching their family tree; e.g. an 80-page INDEX TO EARLY MOORE MARRIAGES with records of nearly 8000 Moore marriages in America 17-19th centuries. In a pocket at the end is a CD labeled MOORE INTERNATIONAL DIRECTORY. The CD is in new condition apparently never removed from the pocket. . 1st ed No additional printings listed. Softcover. <p>The World Book of Irvins</p><p>Halbert's Family Heritage 1996</p><p>Family History</p><p>Paperback</p><p>8.3 x 10.7 inches</p><p>see Table of Contents</p><p>Irvin: This interesting surname is of Anglo-Saxon Scottish and Irish origin from the Middle English 1200 - 1500 given name "Irwyn Erwyn Erwyn Everwyn" from the Old English pre 7th Century "Eoforwine" composed of the elements "eofor" wild boar and "wine" friend. The second source is Scottish and is locational from either Irvine in Strathclyde or from Irving in Dumfriesshire. The placenames are derived from a Celtic river name probably composed of elements cognate with the Welsh "ir yr" green fresh and "afon" water. The third source is Irish and is an Anglicized form of the Gaelic "O' hEireamhoin" meaning descendant of Eireamhon" a personal name of uncertain origin. The modern surname can be found as Irvine Irvin Ervine Urvine Irving Erving Irwine and Irwing. Among the recordings in Scotland are the christening of Thomas son of Alexander Irvine and Barbara Andersone on November 4th 1687 at St. Nicholas Aberdeen.</p><p>The first recorded spelling of the family name is shown to be that of Robert de Hirewyn witness which was dated 1226 in Dumfriesshire Scotland during the reign of King Alexander 11 of Scotland 1214 - 1249. Lacks the front flyleaf and the rear flyleaf is detached. There are bookplates and ink stamps from a genealogical library on the endpapers. The text itself is mostly sound and clean although there is a library ink stamp in the margin pages 71. There are no library markings on the binding. Text is not foxed. The "Crescent" was a series of broad genealogical books with basic information about genealogical research but this is NOT a genealogy of any specific branch of the Hall family.
