‎Henry Grey 1 Churchfield Road East Acton London Ranging in date from the eighteenth century to the early twentieth century. 114 items ranging in size and format. Many are extracted from eighteenth and nineteenth century English and French volumes. In fair condition with signs of age and wear. Containing a few duplicates. Perhaps indicating provence is the presence with two other items in a folder titled 'Hunt Family of Ireland' of a TLS to Grey from W. H. Hunt of Selkirk 25 February 1923 asking him to supply genealogical 'extracts'. Of the present collection the pedigrees variously in manuscript printed and engraved are 24 in number. They include: Constable of Flamborough printed with manuscript additions; Beighton of Wirksworth; Herbert; Pole of Wolverton; Herbert of Chepstow; Chandos of Radborne; Duke of Cavendish; Herbert of Orleton; Morley; Warren; Harburgh of Heslington and Harborough of Campsmount; Arundel; Cantalupe; Earl of Clinton; Croke. The collection also includes a range of engravings of coats of arms of aristocrats and gentlemen many well printed on thick paper. Those of aristocrats are often accompanied by text in French and six of them are engravers' proofs with the text inverted. Typed pages fragile with damage; others near fine. Overall excellent. Content warning: This description mentions sexual assault.<br /> <br /> Alex Haley 1921–1992 was an African American author known for his bestselling 1976 semi-genealogical book Roots: The Saga of an American Family. Roots follows the story of Kunta Kinte a young Mandinka man in 18th-century Gambia who is sold into enslavement and of his descendants in the US. The historical novel was based upon Haley’s genealogical research into his family history; Kunta Kinte is ostensibly Haley’s ancestor on his mother’s side. At the time of his death in 1992 Haley had been working with Australian writer David Stevens on a novel about his father’s side of the family. The novel was published in 1993 as Queen: The Story of an American Family.<br /> <br /> Offered here is a collection of Haley’s own notes that based on the subject matter were likely used in the writing of Queen. The notes discuss Haley’s grandparents Alec Haley and Queen Jackson—the latter being the book’s namesake—and their son Alex’s father Simon Haley. <br /> <br /> Simon Haley was a professor of agriculture and most of his son’s notes about him concern his struggle to obtain an education. The elder Haley worked as a Pullman porter and attended Lane College an HBCU in Tennessee; he was on the brink of having to drop out when “one night he delivered hot milk to an insomniac industrialist who finding Dad was a student financially helped him enter A&T at Greensboro.†<br /> <br /> Haley’s notes on Alec and Queen are disturbing and sometimes graphic. Both were children of sexual assault between enslaved African American women and white men. Alec’s father was Haley plantation overseer William Baugh and Queen’s was James Jackson the owner of Jackson plantation; Haley describes how Alec’s mother Viney was sold away from her family “for stubbornly resisting the overseer’s further advancesâ€. Haley describes a scene that occurred when Queen was 18 after a “white woman said she’d ‘sassed’ her†and a mob “had gathered to catch†her:<br /> <br /> “Queen Haley tells white mob she’s as white as they and why – her father raped her mother … and they cannot bear the intolerable reproach … and try to rape or kill her.â€<br /> <br /> These events and witnessing another lynch mob have permanent effects on Queen’s psyche which Haley’s notes illustrate with anecdotes: Queen “looking out of windows ‘all those lights they’re after me --’†running off and “crawling under the bed†and even disappearing for an entire day and being found hiding “in a deep ravineâ€. However Queen apparently plays the relationship between Jackson and Queen’s mother Easter as a forbidden love affair.<br /> <br /> Of interest to scholars of reconstruction narratives and African American nonfiction novels and historical fiction. unknown‎

‎FAMILY HISTORY OF EAST OAKLAND CALIFORNIA PIONEERS‎

‎Small archive of genealogical material associated with Archibald Leard Taylor 1853-1946 largely compiled by his wife Fannie Elizabeth Taylor née Hawley 1855-1936. An announcement in the Oakland Tribune on June 29 1917 concerning the marriage of their daughter Elva notes “Until a few years ago the Taylors made their home in the East Oakland district where they were numbered with the earlier pioneers.â€<br /> <br /> Born in Salzburg Pennsylvania Archibald Leard Taylor travelled to California around 1878 with his brother Dr. William Stewart Taylor 1847-1931. According to a manuscript biography in Fannie Taylor’s hand he was employed as a salesman “in the country districts†while also studying theology with an interest in pursuing missionary work in China. This passage is followed by a lively account of his pursuit of permanent work in San Francisco which resulted in a position with W.J. Garrett’s Machine Works Brass and Bell Foundry at the corner of Fremont and Natoma streets. While he remained active in the Presbyterian Church the field of engineering provided him with steady employment including as the secretary and treasurer of a crane foundry and as an agent for a high temperature supplies company.<br /> <br /> Alexander and Fannie were married in San Francisco on May 4 1882. Their union resulted in six children including a daughter who died at age two. The couple resided in Oakland Ward 7 until around 1920 when they moved to Mokelumne Hill in Calaveras County to pursue stock farming with Alexander’s sister Mary Margaret Taylor 1852-1925. No account of the success of this endeavor could be found and by 1930 Alexander and Fannie had established a retirement home in San Leandro California.<br /> <br /> Compiled by Fannie with the assistance of relatives genealogical societies and other sources this collection of material includes documentation that establishes a connection with Zachary Taylor the 12th president of the United States. Notably it also includes a family hair album with 37 locks of hair from various individuals in the Taylor and Hawley families. All the locks are stitched in place and labeled with the contributor’s name.
