[Genealogy] [Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints] [Descendants of Brigham Young]
Family Record: Four Pages of Genealogy Relating to Joseph Angell Young
Ephemera. Four pages of genealogy on two loose leaves 6 1/2 x 10 1/4" which appear to have come from a family Bible. The pages are divided into columns with the following headings: Births; Deaths; Marriages. One page lists the births of Joseph A. Young's parents Brigham Young and Mary Ann Angell. On the reverse the marriages of Joseph A. Young and his family members are listed. The second page lists the children of Joseph A. Young and Mary Ann Ayres in the "Births" column. The days of the week along with "G S L City" are listed next to their names and the dates of their births often with the exact time listed as well. On the verso of this page the "Deaths" of their children are listed Mary Thornton Young Elsie Vilate Josephine Young Alice Young and others. Joseph Angell Young 1834-1875 was Brigham Young's eldest son. He was born October 14 1834 in Kirtland Ohio. He came to Utah in an early day and actively participated in the affairs of the new settlement as a frontiersman. He also played an important role in emigration affairs and he is known for enduring bitter storms and biting frosts during one of the harshest winters in order to successfully rescue the belated hand-cart companies of that season. In addition he built and was the first superintendent of the Ogden-Salt Lake line the old Utah Central and was among the promoters of the Utah Southern. In 1872 Young was appointed to preside over the Sevier district of the Church spanning from Gunnison to Kanab. Two years later the settlements on the Sevier were organized as the Sevier Stake of Zion and Elder Young was appointed to preside over this Stake. He held this position until his death taking a significantly active part that tended to build up and strengthen the new settlements as well as introducing the United Order to the Saints on the Sevier. In Latter-day Saint Biographical Encyclopedia Volume I Andrew Jenson cites a passage published by Deseret News following Young's death: "Elder Young was esteemed for his many estimable qualities of heart as well as head. He was a man of naturally keen intelligence his mental qualities even reaching what might be termed brilliancy in some directions while his generosity was proverbial especially among the working classes all who were ever in his employ holding him in esteem for his universally kind and fair treatment." Andrew Jenson also points out that "On account of the persecutions of the 'Mormon' people he Joseph A. Young was deprived of the advantage of an early education but was a discriminating and passionate reader and at the time of his death had perhaps the finest private library in the Territory."<br /> <br /> Two leaves from a Family Record which contain the genealogy of an important family descending from Brigham Young and significant to the history of Utah and the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. - Information obtained from "Latter-day Saint Biographical Encyclopedia Volume I" by Andrew Jenson. unknown

[GENEALOGY & HERALDRY - ROORDA FAMILY]. RODA, Dirk Daniels, and others
Manuscript family chronicle of members of the Roda Werdolen and Bos families.
The Netherlands 1750. Oblong 8vo ca. 10.5 x 16 cm. 18th-century gold-tooled calf gold-tooled spine each board with a double-fillet frame a centrepiece and four cornerpieces gilt edges green cloth ties. Manuscript on paper written in brown and black ink in several - 17th- 18th- and 19th-century hands. With a full-page unidentified coat-of-arms showing three salamanders drawn in brown ink and a page containing 6 smaller crests of branches of the Roorda family in black ink. 1 blank 5 3 blank 20 1 blank 1 78 blank ll. Manuscript family chronicle incorporating multiple chronicles from the 17th and 18th century. The manuscript chronicles the births and deaths of four generations of the Bos Werdolen or Verdole and Roda family in Amersfoort Groningen The Hague Scheveningen IJsselstijn Tiel Deventer Kampen Zuilen and Edam. The book was probably compiled by Dirk Daniel Roda 1726-1898 a lieutenant in the infantry and later beer brewer shortly after the death of his father in 1747. It incorporates chronicles by his father Michiel Roda 1686-1747 his maternal grandfather Jacob Werdolen chronicling 1668-1686 Jacob Werdolen's father Hendrik van Werdolen a note from 1639 and a copy by Hendrik's wife Barbera Bos born 1596 of the chronicle written by her father chronicling 1577-1601.The different chronicles are interleaved with notes by Dirk Daniel Roda which supply additional biographical information. In several pages he describes the his own Roorda ancestors in the 17th century and the process by which they changed their name to Roda. Other notes chronicle the origins of the Roorda family crest of which he has drawn the known six versions. A full-page coat-of-arms containing three salamanders was possibly drawn by Barbera Bos. Although this specific crest could not be identified it probably refers to a branch other than "Bos" meaning forest or wood in her family. With the bookplate of Eltjo Aldegondus van Beresteyn 1876-1948 on the front paste-down. Also with his library label on the front board. Van Beresteyn was very interested in genealogy explaining his possession of the present family chronicle and founded the Centraal Bureau voor Genealogie CBG. A pencil inscription on the second to last leaf notes that the book was bought from H. Coffrie in 1938.Binding somewhat worn and rubbed leather on the spine somewhat cracked and with a few minor gaps paste-downs slightly browned some occasional spotting browning and soiling but overall in good condition. A fascinating family chronicle with a very interesting provenance.l For Van Beresteyn: J.A.A. Bervoets 'Beresteijn jhr. Eltjo Aldegondus van 1876-1948' in: Biografisch Woordenboek van Nederland online source. hardcover

" Mr. Augustus Henry Ward's return address is 14 Washington Place New York dated June 1st 1857. <br /> <br /> It begins "I beg leave to inform you that Horatio Wards Esq. now of London for several years has given a great deal of his time to researches in the origin and early history of OUR race and has it engrossed in only two manuscript books beginning with the year 1130 and coming down to our day thus embracing the prominent families in England of our name for this long period and of some of their Descendants in the United States to which there will be much added by the proposed publication." Further- "As it will comprise so many of the Ward families of England many of their descendants in this country will be able to find the genealogy of their ancestors therein. as the author has done of HIS family viz. the Wards of Westchester County N.Y. descendants of Andrew Ward who landed in 1632 with Gov.
