Era una repubblica e non un regno, era governata da una classe sociale, i patrizi, e non da una famiglia. Forse è per questo che nel corso della sua storia a Venezia le donne hanno trovato molto più spazio che altrove. Non bisogna fraintendere: il concetto di parità fra i sessi era ben al di là da venire, ma nell'ultramillenaria storia della repubblica si susseguono figure femminili che hanno avuto un ruolo fondamentale negli avvenimenti della loro epoca e spesso anche in quelli successivi.
