Giustiniano
ill., br. Giustiniano, imperatore bizantino dal 527 al 565, è una delle personalità maggiori e più influenti dell'età tardoantica. La sua fu un'epoca turbolenta ma fertile; Giustiniano portò i suoi eserciti contro i Vandali e gli Ostrogoti alla riconquista dell'impero d'occidente (soprattutto dell'Italia), e combattè contro Bulgari e Persiani; cercò di imporre l'ortodossia cristiana all'interno dell'impero abolendo e perseguitando gli altri culti, portò a termine una poderosa risistemazione del diritto romano nel "Corpus Iuris Civilis" che ha costituito la base dei sistemi giuridici successivi. Il profilo di Meier riassume con chiarezza i diversi aspetti della vita di Giustiniano e della sua azione: dalla carriera all'ombra dello zio, l'imperatore Giustino, al matrimonio con Teodora, dalle campagne belliche alle rivolte e alle gravi calamità che l'impero dovette fronteggiare al proprio interno, dalle riforme amministrative alla politica religiosa.

Elisabetta I (1533-1603), figlia di Enrico VIII e della sua seconda moglie Anna Bolena, fu l'ultima regnante della dinastia Tudor; sotto il suo regno l'Inghilterra conobbe un periodo di grande splendore, affermandosi come potenza navale, sviluppando l'economia e i commerci e vivendo il Secolo d'Oro per l'arte e la scultura. Elisabetta venne nominata erede al trono dopo la morte dei fratelli Edoardo VI e Maria I, anche se una legge del 1536 (che consentì a Enrico VIII di sposare la terza moglie, Jane Seymour) aveva annullato il matrimonio fra i suoi genitori e l'aveva resa figlia illegittima. Quando Elisabetta salì al trono, l'Inghilterra era un paese lacerato dalle lotte religiose e coinvolto in una guerra contro la Francia. L'abilità con cui la regina fu in grado di risollevare le sorti della nazione e la sua forte personalità la resero una figura amata e rispettata dai sudditi.
