Giustiniano
ill., br. Giustiniano, imperatore bizantino dal 527 al 565, è una delle personalità maggiori e più influenti dell'età tardoantica. La sua fu un'epoca turbolenta ma fertile; Giustiniano portò i suoi eserciti contro i Vandali e gli Ostrogoti alla riconquista dell'impero d'occidente (soprattutto dell'Italia), e combattè contro Bulgari e Persiani; cercò di imporre l'ortodossia cristiana all'interno dell'impero abolendo e perseguitando gli altri culti, portò a termine una poderosa risistemazione del diritto romano nel "Corpus Iuris Civilis" che ha costituito la base dei sistemi giuridici successivi. Il profilo di Meier riassume con chiarezza i diversi aspetti della vita di Giustiniano e della sua azione: dalla carriera all'ombra dello zio, l'imperatore Giustino, al matrimonio con Teodora, dalle campagne belliche alle rivolte e alle gravi calamità che l'impero dovette fronteggiare al proprio interno, dalle riforme amministrative alla politica religiosa.
