Un saggio storico ben approfondito che ricostruisce, attraverso documenti e fonti d'archivio, l'avventura straordinaria di una personalità unica e variegata che ha saputo avere uno sguardo attento e lungimirante sulla politica e sulla storia di un'Europa ancora da divenire.

Portoghese di nascita e napoletana di adozione, Eleonora Pimentel, da acclamata poetessa e bibliotecaria della corte borbonica, erede del riformismo culturale del Genovesi e del Filangieri, aderì alla causa rivoluzionaria di fine secolo, assumendosi un impegno civile nuovo per una donna del suo tempo. Nominata compilatrice del Monitore Napoletano, organo di stampa del Governo Provvisorio del 1799, con la restaurazione borbonica pagò con la vita l'impegno profuso nella divulgazione delle idee libertarie. Il volume, oltre ad offrire al lettore una chiara esposizione del complesso periodo storico, fa emergere la biografia della Pimentel in tutti i risvolti drammatici del suo vissuto, dalla separazione dal marito, alle gravidanze mancate, intrecciandola all'evolversi di idee e avvenimenti politico-sociali che caratterizzarono il panorama dell'Italia e particolarmente del Mezzogiorno alla fine del XVIII secolo. Considerata nelle sue vicissitudini umane, oltre che nell'impegno civile, la figura della Pimentel viene raccontata nel suo percorso cronologico e soprattutto nella sua integrità di 'persona' e non di 'personaggio'. L'autrice ripercorre le tappe fondamentali che determinarono le scelte di questa eroina rivoluzionaria e il drammatico epilogo della sua esistenza.

br. Maria Antonietta e Maria Carolina, figlie di Maria Teresa d'Austria, furono le ultime nate di una generazione di eredi che la "suocera" d'Europa giocò come pedine sullo scacchiere del continente. La politica matrimoniale dell'imperatrice del Sacro Romano Impero aveva unito due capitali, Parigi e Napoli, dove le due sorelle regine divennero tra le sovrane piú famose, criticate e temute del tempo, capaci di esercitare in misure diverse il potere della monarchia assoluta al fianco di consorti inadeguati. Simboli dell'"Ancien régime", non furono mai amate dai loro sudditi, né si prodigarono per farsi accettare, attirandosi l'epiteto di "Austriache", atto a sminuire la loro autorità in quanto straniere. Diffamate per la loro vanità o per la dubbia moralità delle loro vite private, restarono legate a doppio filo l'una all'altra, prima che il flagello della Rivoluzione recidesse l'ordito dei loro destini, allorquando, in uno dei momenti fatali della storia universale, le giovani arciduchesse austriache divennero «l'una vittima del parossismo sanguinario della rivoluzione francese, l'altra carnefice dei primi campioni del liberalismo italiano».

Classe 1926, Elisabetta II ha battuto molti record, con i suoi 68 anni sul trono (più della regina Vittoria!), durante i quali ha visto passare 7 papi e 14 primi ministri: da Winston Churchill, vincitore della seconda guerra mondiale, a Boris Johnson, falco della Brexit, passando per la Lady di Ferro Margaret Thatcher. Ha conosciuto l'adorazione dei sudditi e vissuto periodi di assoluta impopolarità, dopo la tragica morte di Diana.
