Fu volontario a fianco dei coloni degli Stati Uniti per tutta la durata del conflitto, diventando amico personale di George Washington e guadagnandosi sul campo i gradi di generale. Tornato in patria sposò in pieno gli ideali della rivoluzione francese cercando di mantenere posizioni moderate. Avversò Napoleone e dopo la "restaurazione" cercò di portare, senza successo, la monarchia su posizioni più democratiche. Se La Fayette, con i suoi ideali, spesso scomodi, fosse riuscito a incidere ancora più a fondo la storia del vecchio continente avrebbe avuto un corso molto diverso.

br. Riccardo I, re d'Inghilterra dal 1189 al 1199, risiedette sull'isola per soli sei mesi e probabilmente non parlò mai la lingua locale. Eppure è certamente rimasto, per quasi otto secoli, il più amato dei sovrani inglesi. Questa popolarità non deve nulla alla leggenda: i contemporanei sono unanimi nel descriverlo come il "re dei re", nessuno è andato "più in là di lui in ardore, magnanimità, cavalleria e tutte le altre virtù". Coraggioso fino alla temerarietà e brillante letterato, incarnò mirabilmente l'ideale di cavalleria del XII secolo. Assente per molto tempo a causa della crociata e di un'interminabile prigionia nelle carceri dell'imperatore Enrico VI, morì all'età di quarantuno anni vicino a Limoges; una morte prematura ed estremamente dannosa per l'Inghilterra e l'Aquitania, ma che contribuì a renderlo immortale nella memoria del popolo inglese.
