‎br. Marino Falier è una delle figure più controverse nella storia dei dogi di Venezia. Nato verso il 1285 da una importante famiglia di antichissima origine, che annoverava già due dogi, percorse una lunga e brillante carriera al servizio della repubblica che lo portò a ricoprire in modo quasi incessante numerose e prestigiose cariche. Nel 1354, ormai settantenne, venne scelto come doge con un ampio consenso del corpo elettorale. Al di là di ogni previsione, tuttavia, il nuovo doge non si limitò a svolgere le funzioni per lo più di rappresentanza che la costituzione veneziana riservava al capo dello stato. Appoggiandosi alle classi popolari, si mise alla testa di una congiura destinata a rovesciare lo stato patrizio che governava la Serenissima. I congiurati vennero però scoperti: i capi della cospirazione furono rapidamente giustiziati e lo stesso doge, da loro indicato come il mandante, fu giudicato e condannato a morte. La sentenza venne eseguita con la decapitazione, che ebbe luogo la sera del 17 aprile del 1355 dopo un processo lampo. Un caso senza precedenti, una storia avvincente che nei secoli ha ispirato letterati e musicisti - da Lord Byron a Donizetti - e su cui ancora fitto è il mistero.‎
