Da Ravensbrück ci sono pervenuti fortunosamente disegni e poesie di donne che, nonostante le sofferenze, le violenze e le privazioni a cui erano sottoposte, hanno mantenuto la loro umanità ricorrendo alla creatività e alle relazioni in una dimensione di trascendenza per riaffermare il primato della vita. Le prigioniere, utilizzate come schiave nelle fabbriche di guerra, erano detenute per reati comuni, politiche di varia nazionalità che militavano in organizzazioni antifasciste, ebree, zingare, omosessuali. Che cosa ha spinto quelle donne a comporre poesie e a disegnare clandestinamente in un luogo in cui rischiavano la vita soltanto per procurarsi un pezzetto di carta o un mozzicone di matita? Certo c'era il desiderio di testimoniare. Ma sicuramente c'è anche molto altro. Incredibile la sproporzione tra la disumana realtà del campo e il desiderio di fare arte: la prima mirava ad annullare la personalità, il secondo, invece, a rafforzare la consapevolezza di sé perché l'arte è frutto ed esaltazione della singolarità. La volontà di sopravvivere, di lasciare una traccia di sé, di non essere ingoiata dalla mostruosità del campo dava a quelle poetesse e artiste la forza di esprimersi. La poesia, così come il disegno, si prestava a descrivere l'esperienza di sofferenza e di disperazione, ma anche a realizzare l'insopprimibile bisogno di bellezza, sia per la forma sintetica sia per la possibilità di tradurre in immagine un discorso che altrimenti sarebbe stato incomprensibile se misurato con lo strumento della logica. Leggendo le testimonianze delle sopravvissute e ripensando alla mia storia personale e alle donne sottoposte in varia misura al potere patriarcale è nato dentro di me il desiderio di uscire dal vittimismo, pur consapevole dell'ingiustizia della condizione femminile, per approdare alla certezza che la coscienza del proprio essere donna quando è all'opera dà frutti anche in ambienti aridi e ostili, appena trova un po' di terreno in cui attecchire. È stato, dunque, un viaggio dall'orrore alla creatività, dal vittimismo al senso di sé, dalla disperazione alla speranza di riuscire sempre a conservare e agire la propria umanità e la fedeltà a sé nel posto e nella vita in cui ci è dato di stare."
