br. Di tutta la grande famiglia dei «fratelli riformati», gli anglicani sono quelli che più si avvicinano ai cattolici. Ciò è dovuto al noto senso di moderazione degli inglesi, che hanno saputo trovare un buon compromesso tra gli estremi. Il mirabile equilibrio fu raggiunto da una sovrana straordinaria, tollerante e di larghe vedute, che seppe contrastare il fanatismo religioso della sorella (Maria la sanguinaria) riuscendo a creare una fede che fosse veramente nazionale. Elisabetta I fu la regina più amata della storia. Fu lei a saper capire il suo popolo come nessun altro; fu grazie a lei che l'Inghilterra si affermò come potenza mondiale; fu intorno a lei che i suoi sudditi si strinsero come un sol uomo nel momento del pericolo. Lei la regina adorata, osannata, celebrata, e dai più grandi poeti, come Gloriana, la Regina Vergine. Tutto ciò è romantico e commovente; peccato che, come questo libro dimostra documenti alla mano, sia profondamente falso. Il regime elisabettiano fu, di fatto, un sistema totalitario tra i più amari della storia. Peccato che il mito di Gloriana sia stato sapientemente costruito, pezzo dopo pezzo, da una minoranza al governo che fece carte false per conservare il potere. Peccato che il popolo si sia visto perseguitato, impoverito, oppresso come mai prima di allora. Peccato che la tanto decantata «vicinanza» degli anglicani al cattolicesimo sia nata da un duplice desiderio fondamentalmente molto semplice e concreto: gettare fumo negli occhi dei sudditi e formare una gerarchia di agenti governativi travestiti da ecclesiastici. Peccato che l'evoluzione-involuzione degli inglesi sia costata migliaia di vite umane, molte delle quali (tra cui anche la Regina di Scozia) finirono immolate e squartate sul patibolo per alto tradimento. Peccato che, come nel Mercante di Venezia shakespeariano, lo scrigno d'oro contenga soltanto un teschio.

Original crimson full cloth over beveled boards binding. The boards and spine are decorated with gilt strap designs. Corners worn. Edward E. Salisbury (1814-1901), by permission, gathered this valuable information from the archives of the New Haven Colony Historical Society, and, after some revision, had it privately printed in April 1876. The most famous early member of the family was Giovanni Diodati or Deodati (1576-1649), a Swiss theologian and translator. He was the first person to translate the Bible into Italian from Hebrew and Greek sources. He was born at Geneva, of a noble family originally from Lucca which had been exiled on account of its Protestantism. John Milton supposedly vacationed at the Villa Diodati in 1639. In 1816 it was the summer residence of Lord Byron, Mary Shelley, Percy Shelley, John Polidori and others - and thus the first home of Frankenstein and The Vampyre. Hardbound. Very good. Incarcerato nel 1925 per la pubblicazione del foglio clandestino «Non mollare», riparò in Francia, poi in Inghilterra e infine negli Stati Uniti, dove divenne docente alla Harvard University per due decenni. Dobbiamo a lui una delle più lucide analisi sulle origini del fascismo. I due libri che Bollati Boringhieri ripropone ora in tascabile, proprio per rendere il pensiero di questo intellettuale il più possibile visibile al pubblico contemporaneo, appartengono a due stagioni molto distanti della vita di Salvemini.

Le pagine dei Ricordi di un fuoruscito - scritte da Gaetano Salvemini negli ultimi anni di vita - presentano un quadro realistico e affascinante del decennio cruciale compreso tra la marcia su Roma e il consolidamento del regime fascista. La testimonianza autobiografica - dalla lotta clandestina del 1923-25 (costatagli l'arresto per la stampa del giornale «Non Mollare») all'espatrio seguito da un'intensa attività politico-culturale in Francia, Inghilterra e Stati Uniti - evidenzia il percorso esistenziale di un intellettuale controcorrente, che nei primi anni d'esilio compose opere fondamentali quali The Fascist Dictatorship in Italy (1927) e Mussolini diplomate (1932). La presente edizione, condotta sulle carte lasciate dallo storico, ripristina alcune parti rimaste inedite e ristabilisce l'originario progetto salveminiano di un volume organico, corredato da importanti e rari documenti sugli aspri scontri che all'estero contrapposero Salvemini a propagandisti fascisti, emissari della polizia politica e del ministero degli Esteri.

Mazzini. Con i «Doveri dell'uomo» di Giuseppe Mazzini

Fu la sanguinosa repressione del generale Bava Beccaris ai moti di Milano del 1898 a spingere il giovane socialista Salvemini, allora promettente studioso di storia medioevale, a spostare i propri interessi verso la storia contemporanea. Da dove nasceva la crisi che il giovane Stato italiano stava attraversando con la reazione di fine secolo? Le sue radici andavano ricercate nelle fragilità e negli errori della democrazia risorgimentale e in alcune ambiguità e contraddizioni di uno dei fondatori dell'Italia unita e indipendente: Giuseppe Mazzini. Se da una parte i principi di libertà e unità, l'ideale repubblicano e l'attenzione alla questione sociale rendevano Mazzini una figura fondante del movimento democratico, altri aspetti del suo pensiero e della sua opera non meno rilevanti ma spesso trascurati - come la centralità del riferimento a Dio e alcuni tratti dogmatici - si sarebbero dimostrati terreno fertile per successive istanze autoritarie. Analizzando la vita e le opere di Mazzini, e in particolare i suoi Doveri dell'uomo, Salvemini mette in luce sia il messaggio di libertà sia le ambiguità teoriche del padre della patria, grazie alle quali del pensiero mazziniano "ciascuno attingeva e adottava quelle parti che corrispondevano al proprio stato d'animo, e trascurava o non comprendeva il resto". La riflessione di Salvemini si sposta quindi sulla fortuna di Mazzini e sui suoi diversi usi politici, culminati nell'utilizzo che ne avrebbe fatto il fascismo preparando, un quarto di secolo dopo le cannonate di Bava Beccaris, la propria svolta dittatoriale.
