Even though these deeds begin with the creation of the court system there are deeds within this book that go back to as early as 1793. Ho solo la mia volontà che non si piega. Americo Sbardella, tra campagna di Grecia e Montenegro, da I.M.I. a Generale

"Nato e cresciuto in un laborioso paese di antiche origini, in fase di crescita legata alla presenza del Regio Polverificio, formatosi in una (numerosa) famiglia e nella scuola di un tempo andato che gli hanno dato solide basi, coinvolto nella sciagurata campagna di Grecia, Americo Sbardella ha saputo tenere alto lo spirito nella terribile "non vita" del lager. Si colgono la grande sensibilità e la forza d'animo di Americo da due frasi (e non solo) nelle lettere dal lager: una è quella che dà il titolo a questo lavoro; l'altra, "Perdonatemi il dolore che arreco (lui, che pativa nel lager!) con tali notizie", ci dà la misura della persona! Tornato a casa, con senso di responsabilità derivato dall'essere il figlio maschio maggiore e conscio di tale ruolo, con innato altruismo, in un tempo di ristrettezze, mette a disposizione, della famiglia e delle sorelle in difficoltà, le risorse economiche derivate dallo stipendio di Ufficiale non fruito a causa della prigionia. Cui aggiunge, con la propria presenza, anche il sostegno morale! Servendo con rigore morale e salda lealtà, nel tempo di pace, in molti àmbiti ha dato ogni energia all'Istituzione di cui era parte: a suo merito, inoltre, l'aver saputo dire un NO fermo e chiaro a chi intendeva trascinarlo in oscuri disegni, a scapito della carriera ma a guadagno e conferma della dignità e dell'onore. Il Gen. Sbardella possedeva le migliori qualità e caratteristiche per un Ufficiale: spirito d'iniziativa, senso dell'organizzazione, attento impiego delle risorse economiche, serenità ed equilibrio. Soprattutto, conoscenza e attenzione ai problemi del personale, del cui benessere "si è preoccupato molto", scrivono i suoi comandanti, che ne descrivono inoltre come molto umana ed un po' indulgente l'azione disciplinare. Una visione e un'azione a 360°. La sua poliedrica personalità inoltre, sapeva andare oltre gli schemi, perché dotata di fantasia e qualità artistiche di pregio, come scrivono figli e superiori. La sua magnifica figura di Soldato poi, si traspone e si completa nell'altro ambito a lui congeniale e per lui imprescindibile/vitale: la famiglia. Ne sono testimonianza e conferma gli scritti, le fotografie, la vivida testimonianza dei figli, per i quali è ancora un sicuro riferimento. Dalla sua vita discendono insegnamenti di alto contenuto etico: lealtà verso le Istituzioni, senso del dovere e spirito di servizio, rispetto e solidarietà, fermezza d'animo nelle avversità."
