Il principe ereditario aveva poca considerazione della donna, che nel migliore dei casi etichettava come amante o facile preda sessuale. La causa principale di questa scelta è stato quasi certamente il comportamento che la madre ha avuto nei suoi confronti. Come scrive l'autore, "Elisabetta era una madre incompleta. Non riuscì ad avere la meglio sulla strapotente suocera per detenere il controllo sui figli... Una crisi matrimoniale e il labile stato fisico e psichico dell'imperatrice, che la portò ad allontanarsi dalla famiglia, fecero il resto... e così Rodolfo crebbe praticamente senza madre". Gisella, la sorella maggiore, era invece l'inseparabile compagna di giochi. Un legame solido, sincero, che sarebbe durato tutta la vita. Anche in nonna Sofia Rodolfo trovò una figura affidabile, sempre presente, autorevole ma affettuosa. Ligia al dovere, Sofia si adoperò instancabilmente per preparare il tanto atteso nipote al suo futuro ruolo di imperatore. La sorella minore, Maria Valeria, unica fortunata beneficiaria di un amore materno che Rodolfo aveva così tanto agognato per sé, fu invece bersaglio di tutte le insicurezze e gelosie del fratello. Infine la moglie Stefania nella quale l'erede al trono aveva riposto le uniche speranze di una vita familiare serena, di un focolare di affetti e sincera complicità: un sogno infranto da diversità caratteriali e da visioni del mondo diametralmente opposte. E poi c'è la giovanissima Mary Vetsera, che non aveva alcuna possibilità di realizzare il suo sogno d'amore, ma che ostinatamente continuava a crederci. Tra questi famosi personaggi fa capolino anche il vivace universo di donne normali - balie, tate, istitutrici, prostitute - che hanno dato a Rodolfo quel po' di amore e comprensione umana che gli hanno consentito di sopravvivere. Da non dimenticare il ruolo avuto dall'amica-amante Mitzi Caspar, una escort d'alto bordo, alla quale Rodolfo era molto affezionato: è stata forse l'unica donna che ha amato veramente. Infatti nel suo testamento ha provveduto generosamente al suo futuro. Il libro ci svela anche i molteplici aspetti della vita al femminile nell'Ottocento, dalla maternità al ruolo delle donne in famiglia, dalla sessualità ai primi vagiti di un'emancipazione femminile che, seppur ancora lontana, avrebbe mutato radicalmente la società europea. Quel "mondo di ieri", già descritto magistralmente da Stefan Zweig nella sua indimenticabile autobiografia, ci viene ripresentato in queste pagine.

The records show that many of the men who came into this area beore the county was organized were Revolutionary soldiers and that their wives in many cases were daughters of soldiers of that war. Many were given land grants for service rendered their country. Some brought their slaves from as far east as Massachusetts. Their wills show that besides land slaves and stock they possessed furniture of the best make. They were mostly people of education as their letters and signatures testify. This book is divided into five parts. Part I "Kingston and the County ' contains tax lists from 1802 and 1808 the first licensed merchants and hotels a list of voters and summons for jury in 1809 members of militia companies in 1855 and justices in 1819. Part II "Military Record " lists Revolutionary soldiers and graves Soldiers of the War of 1812 Mexican War War between the States World War Records Gold Star list and Distinguished Service Crosses. Part III "Churches Academy and Lodge " describes Bethel church Rittenhouse Academy Kinston Grave Yard and the Masonic Lodge. Part IV contains marriage records. Beginning in 1804 the records are arranged chronologically and give the names of the bride groom bondsmen and sometimes the official who performed the service. Part V "Records of Early Families " comprises nearly tow-thirds of the book. Arranged alphabetically these records typically give the early settler's place of origin military service occupation spouse's Names s and children. In some cases several generations are recorded. Dates are given wherever known. A new surname index allows the reader to identify families and to find "buried" surnames among the records. . Heritage Books paperback
