Antonio Guarasci (1918-1974) è una delle figure più rappresentative della scuola, della cultura e della politica calabrese del secondo Novecento. Come insegnante di Filosofia e Storia nell'immediato secondo dopoguerra, sperimenta nella pratica didattica i principi della pedagogia progressiva del Dewey, da lui conosciuti negli anni della prigionia negli USA. Come docente universitario indirizza le sue ricerche sulla storia della Calabria moderna e contemporanea, partecipando al rinnovamento della storiografia italiana contemporanea. Come politico, concepisce l’attività politica nella sua accezione originaria di servizio alla comunità, secondo gli orientamenti del cattolicesimo sociale. Per le attività svolte nel corso della sua vita, Guarasci lascia in eredità un patrimonio ideale e politico che è dovere di ogni calabrese conoscere e valorizzare per il bene della comunità regionale. Antonio Guarasci (1918-1974) was an iconic figure of the Calabrian schooling system, culture and politics in the late twentieth century. As a teacher of Philosophy and History in the immediate post-war period, he experimented in teaching the progressive pedagogy of Dewey, who he met in the years of his imprisonment in the USA. As a professor, he directed his research on the history of modern and contemporary Calabria, participating in the renewal of contemporary Italian historiography. As a politician, he conceived his political activity in its original sense of service to the community, in accordance with the principles of social Catholicism. For all the activities carried out in his life, Guarasci’s legacy consists in his political and ideal heritage, that is duty of every Calabrian person to know and promote for the good of the entire community. Nella seconda metà del Novecento calabrese, una figura emblematica esprime la sutura tra cultura e politica. Il prof. Antonio Guarasci, docente ordinario di Storia e Filosofia presso il Liceo Classico B. Telesio di Cosenza, e poi docente di Storia contemporanea presso le università di Lecce, Salerno e finalmente Arcavacata, utilizza i canoni della sua originale ricerca storica come parametri della programmazione politica. Il "Novecentismo" del prof. Guarasci privilegia la storia globale di tutti i fenomeni spaziali e sociali in una regione meridionale, come la Calabria, dove negli ultimi secoli gli intellettuali sono stati invece prevalentemente rivolti ai ragionamenti filosofici. Le cadenze storiche, nell'ispirazione politico-istituzionale di Antonio Guarasci, evidenziano, a loro volta, la formazione dei ceti dirigenti e delle comunità. Guarasci avverte che le trasformazioni del pre-moderno in moderno esigono in Calabria una vasta azione riparatrice del "martirio della scuola" calabrese, secondo la felice espressione coniata da U. Zanotti Bianco, che aveva intravisto nella lotta all' analfabetismo il primo ineludibile passaggio per l'inserimento delle masse popolari nella vita dello Stato. Così il primo popolarismo di Guarasci non degraderà verso le versioni assistenziali ma punterà sul diritto all'istruzione, dalle elementari all'università, per affermare le "novità" del sistema democratico nel vecchio mondo calabrese. Antonio Guarasci - scrive Cappelli nella "Calabria" di Einaudi - rappresenta il passaggio del potere dal ceto avvocatizio a quello dei professori e precede l'avvento dei "nuovi tecnici" di discutibile fama. Antonio Guarasci non ha vissuto la strana transizione calabrese dal pre-moderno al post-moderno, con il salto dell'industrializzazione, che innesta una paradossale continuità delle culture individualistiche, familiaristiche e non organiche, della società contadina con quella dei computer; una continuità appena inceppata dai mediocri collettivi e sociali del terziario urbano. Proprio per questo rimane quanto mai attuale il Suo metodo aggregante delle grandi forze popolari illuminate dalla cultura impegnata in prima linea nelle trasformazioni quali-quantitative della società calabrese.
