Originally published in six volumes between 1776 and 1788 the work traced Western civilization as well as the Islamic and Mongolian conquests from the height of the Roman Empire to the fall of Byzantium. The work was widely praised for its iconic literary style and Gibbon's rigorous scholarship. This set is complete in two volumes with the first covering a three hundred year span to the fall of the Roman empire in the West with the following 1000 years condensed in the second volume. Collated complete with twenty eight plates to volume I four of which are folding and twenty nine to volume II one of which is folding. This work was edited with notes and a memoir by the renowned French historian orator and statesman Francois Guizot. This set is undated dated using Copac. With publisher's advertisements to the rear of volume I. Condition: Rebound in a half crushed morocco binding with cloth over boards and gilded top page edges. Externally lovely with only minor shelfwear to extremities. Front hinge slightly split and strained volume I but still reasonably firm. Internally firmly bound.
