EDGAR H[OWARD] STURTEVANT, (1875-1952), GEORGE BECHTEL.
A Hittite chrestomathy.
Very Good English Original cloth bdg. Roy. 8vo. (24 x 17 cm). In English. 230 p. A Hittite chrestomathy. Sturtevant was an American linguist. Besides research on Native American languages and field work on the Modern American English dialects, he is the father of the Indo-Hittite hypothesis, first formulated in 1926, based on his seminal work establishing the Indo-European character of Hittite (and the related Anatolian languages), with Hittite exhibiting more archaic traits than the normally reconstructed forms for Proto-Indo-European. He authored the first scientifically acceptable Hittite grammar with a chrestomathy and a glossary, formulated the so-called Sturtevant's law (the doubling of consonants representing Proto-Indo-European voiceless stops) and laid the foundations to what later became the Goetze-Wittmann law (the spirantization of palatal stops before u as the focal origin of the centum-satem isogloss). First Edition.

Edgar Thurston
Coins Catalogue No.1 Mysore
About The Book : It is a catalogue that contains coins found throughout its past in the region of Mysore. The introduction covers a brief history of Mysore, along with the unique coins of each ruler. To Captain R. H. Campbell Tufnell, I am indebted for the pains and trouble which he took in correcting and revising the proof sheets, and for comparing the inscriptions in the text with those on the coins. The frontispiece represents in the centre the obverse of the medal struck in commemoration of the taking of Seringapatam in 1 799, and above and below, the silver medals struck "for services in Mysore" in 1791-2. About The Author : Edgar Thurston, (1855–1935) was the British Superintendent at the Madras Government Museum from 1885 to 1908 who contributed to research studies in the fields of zoology, ethnology and botany of India, and later also published his works at the museum. Thurston was educated in medicine and lectured in anatomy at the Madras Medical College while simultaneously holding a senior position at the museum. His early works were on numismatics and geology, and these were later followed by researches in anthropology and ethnography. He succeeded Frederick S. Mullaly as the Superintendent of Ethnography for the Madras Presidency. Thurston was awarded the Kaisar-i-Hind Medal, first class, on 26 June 1902. He was made C.I.E. in 1909. He retired to England and spent his winters at Penzance where he studied the local plants and regularly hosted a New Year party for the local botanists. He died on 12 October 1935 at Penzance.

EDHEM ELDEM.
Le voyage a Nemrud Dagi d'Osman Hamdi Bey et Osgan Efendi, 1883.
New English Paperback. Pbo. 4to. (28 x 22,5 cm). In French. 144 p. B/w ills.
