[Archaeology]; Hogarth David G, Editor
AUTHORITY AND ARCHAEOLOGY SACRED AND PROFANE Essays on the Relation of Monuments to Biblical and Classical Literature. By S.R. Driver Ernest A. Gardner F. LL. Griffith F. Haverfield A.C. Headlam and D.G. Hogarth. With an Introductory Chapter on the Nature of Archaelogy by the Editor.
London: John Murray Albemarle Street 1899. Second Edition same year as the first and without changes probably the sheets of the first edition with a slug added to the title-page. 8vo publisher's original green cloth the spine lettered in gilt the upper cover decorated and lettered in blind. xiv 440 pp. A fine copy bright clean tight and with very little age evidence. A SIGNIFICANT WORK EDITED AND WITH EMENDATIONS AND IMPORTANT CONTRIBUTIONS BY DAVID HOGARTH ONE OF THE GREAT ARCHEOLOGISTS OF THE 19TH AND EARLY 20TH CENTURIES. The essays show in what ways and to what degree the results of archaeological research may affect the views of those who without special archaeological knowledge concern themselves with the antiquity of civilization. Chapters contain significant findings from the Hebrew Classical and Christian histories and are concerned with the Biblical Egyptian Assyrian Greek Roman and Christian worlds. <br> D.G. Hogarth was the British archaeologist and scholar associated with T. E. Lawrence and Arthur Evans. He was Keeper of the Ashmolean Museum Oxford from 1909 to 1927. Commissioned into the Royal Naval Volunteer Reserve during the First World War he served with the Naval Intelligence Division. During 1916 he was the acting director of the Arab Bureau and was later responsible for delivering the Hogarth message.<br> In 1886 Hogarth was elected a Fellow of Magdalen College Oxford. Between 1887 and 1907 he traveled to excavations in Cyprus Crete Egypt Syria Melos and Ephesus the Temple of Artemis. On the island of Crete he excavated the Zakros and Psychro Cave. Hogarth was named director of the British School at Athens in 1897 and occupied the position until 1900. He was the keeper of the Ashmolean Museum in Oxford from 1909 until his death in 1927.<br> In 1915 during the First World War Hogarth was commissioned with the temporary rank of lieutenant commander in the Royal Naval Volunteer Reserve and joined the Geographical Section of the Naval Intelligence Division. Professor Hogarth was appointed the acting director of the Arab Bureau for a time during 1916 when Sir Mark Sykes went back to London. Hogarth was close with T. E. Lawrence and worked with Lawrence to plan the Arab Revolt.<br> Sykes befriended Hogarth who had described India Government as believing they had a moral imperative to the British Raj as the best form of government and could not fail in their duty to impose it on a Province of Mesopotamia. The Arabists rejected this proposal vehemently; Sykes taking Hogarth's research as evidence of the uniquely different situation in the protectorate. The archaeologists knew it was clear that the Raj had no understanding of the different conditions that there needed to be a specific "Arab Policy" for what had become a frontier of empire. Hogarth returned to Oxford and the Ashmolean Museum in June 1919.From 1925 to 1927 he was President of the Royal Geographical Society.<br> In 1896 Hogarth was elected a Fellow of the Royal Geographical Society FRGS. In 1905 he was elected a Fellow of the British Academy FBA the United Kingdom's national academy for the humanities and social sciences. In 1917 he was made a Commander of the Order of the Nile by the Sultan of Egyptand awarded the Founder's Medal of the Royal Geographical Society. In the 1918 New Year Honours he was appointed a Companion of the Order of St Michael and St George CMG for his efforts during the First World War. In 1919 he was awarded the Order of Nahda Hejaz 2nd class by Hussein bin Ali Sharif of Mecca. John Murray, Albemarle Street hardcover

[ARCHAEOLOGY - PHILOLOGY] BARTHELEMY, Jean-Jacques and others
Collection of texts on early archaeology and philology.
Various places 1760. 4to. various publishers Mid-19th-century half red goatskin morocco sewn on 4 supports gold-tooled spine blind-tooled fillets with the cypher monogram of a French count in compartments 1 3 & 5 crowned script L and reversed L like the Bourbon royal cypher but with a counts crown instead of a kings crown and labbéBarthelemy and Dissertations1760-1792 in mid-19th-century roman capitals across compartments 2 & 4 agathe chemical-marbled sides black on red Spanish-marbled endpapers light brown spots with white and dark brown veins red sprinkled edges green ribbon marker. 10 works in 1 volume. 16; 43 1 blank; 24; 28 XIV; 2 44; 12; 8; 12; 1 1 blank 45 1 blank; 9 1 blank pp. Very important collection of essays and other texts marking the establishment of archaeology and philology as serious scientific disciplines. While still drawing from the experience and works of "antiquarians" who studied antiquity in a more amateurish and occasional way the authors of the present works attempted to work more methodically towards greater discoveries. This renewed interest in antiquity and the move to studying it in a more scientific way came as a result of several major 18th-century discoveries like the Herculaneum 1709 Pompeii 1748 and the Rosetta Stone 1799 see ad 4.Naturally Egyptology is also a well-represented subject in the present work. It includes a fabulous depiction and detailed description and explanation of the Nile mosaic of Palestrina ad 5 a floor mosaic depicting the flow of the river Nile from the Blue Nile in Ethiopia to the Mediterranean Sea. Additionally the study of hieroglyphs and differing views on deciphering the Ancient Egyptian scripts can be found in ads 3 and 4.Philology in this case the study of language in written historical sources not in oral ones is a returning subject in many of the essays in the present work including the Christie's auction catalogue since it comprises a list of written historical sources in the form of oriental especially Ethiopic manuscripts collected by James Bruce. Four works by the abbot and scholar Jean-Jacques Barthélemy 1716-1795 are also included. He was the first to decipher two alphabets of ancient extinct languages: Palmyrene and Phoenician. His works also include descriptions depictions and explanations of Phoenician medals and the collection of texts in the present volume ends with an engraved example of the Phoenician alphabet. The monogram on the binding based on Louis XIVs but with a counts crown instead of the royal crown suggests that the collection was bound for a Bourbon Count Louis in the mid-19th century. Olivier Reliures armoriées Françaises records many examples with the royal crown but only one with a counts crown plate 1095 no. 3 and it does not resemble the present one and is much older: Ange-Laurent de la Live de Jully 1725-1779. Boards slightly worn mainly at the extremities occasional foxing and browning mainly to ad 3 and 4 fore-edge of ad 1 and foot of ad 3 and 4 slightly frayed upper headband broken but complete. Palaeolithic Man in N.W. Middlesex; The Evidence of His Existence and the Physical Conditions under which He Lived in Ealing and its Neighbourhood .
London: Macmillan & Co 1887. First edition. Hardcover. Very Good or better. 8vo. 5 ii-iii 2 2-227 1 pp. Brown pebbled publisher's cloth with black rules to the boards and spine a gold decoration on the front board spine lettered in gold. Black coated endpapers and pastedowns. Illustrated with a frontispiece and with five plates bound at the end of the volume. The majority of the images on the plates show spearheads and other palaeolithic implements from Middlesex one plate shows images from a palaeolithic cave in Europe the other images are that of weapons from hunter-gatherer tribes in New Guinea Australia with some tools used by Inuit peoples. A large portion of the book is devoted to scholarly archaeology and geological studies of Great Britain with the use of evidence excavated from burial mounds and other historic sites and with the use of written sources Caesar Tacitus etc. At the end of the volume the author considers several different written sources on hunter-gatherer tribes from Australia the Arctic region southern Africa New Guinea New Zealand and other places. Much of this written evidence is taken from Europeans during the early days of exploration and colonization and reflects the historical prejudices within. The author himself often reflects these prejudices in the language that he uses. The author discusses various historical customs of these different peoples and frequently compares them to the customs of palaeolithic Britons. Traces of rubbing to the cloth and a 1923 name on the verso of the front flyleaf. Macmillan & Co hardcover
