The Paphian Sanctuary of Aphrodite was one of the most famous of shrines of the goddess in Antiquity renowned throughout the Greek and Roman world. The city of Palaipaphos seat of the Kinyrad priest kings was from the Late Bronze Age until early Hellenistic times the only large urban settlement in southwestern Cyprus. The "Guide to Palaipaphos" written by Professor F. G. Maier Hon FSA who excavated at Kouklia since 1952 with contributions by Dr. S. Hadjisavvas and Dr. M.-L. von Wartburg FSA traces the history of Palaipaphos through nearly 5000 years from the Chalcolithic period to the present day and desribes in detail all monuments surviving at Kouklia- Palaipaphos. Besides the Sanctuary of Aphrodite where the continuity of cult can be established for at least 1600 years from the Late Bronze Age to the Late Roman period these include two unique sites: the Persian siege ramp at the Northeast Gate and the well preserved medieval sugar refinery complex at Kouklia-Stavros. An additional chapter describes the history of archaelogical research at Kouklia which begins in 1802 · earlier than at any other site in the island. Profusely illustrated with drawings and photographs the "Guide" presents a comprehensive view of the history and archaeology of one of the most important ancient cities of Cyprus.
