‎"Les Mayas ne disparurent pas de l'histoire comme par enchantement, comme certains auteurs veulent nous le faire croire. Heurtés de front par l'invasion espagnole au début du XVIe siècle, ils résistèrent avec acharnement aux conquistadores qui inauguraient en Amérique un mode de pillage. La conquête de l'empire maya se fit entre 1521 et 1544. Au XIXe siècle, les Mayas firent encore parler d'eux au cours de la guerre des castas. Aujourd'hui, il existe deux millions de Mayas divisés en plusieurs tribus : Yucateks, Chols, Chontals, Lacandom, Tzotzils, Tzeltals, Tojola-bals, Quichoi, Cakchiquels, Chubs, Pokoman, Ixils, Chortis, Mams et les Kekchis, les Pokonchis, les Huasteks. Charles Gallenkamp évoque avec émotion la découverte en 1960 d'une grotte « Balan-Kanché » sanctuaire dédié au dieu ide la pluie Tlatoc et la cérémonie de 24 heures faite par 13 prêtres pour apaiser la colère du Dieu et des Balansi, gardiens de la grotte et des sources pour prévenir non seulement une vengeance divine sur les violateurs, mais aussi une disgrâce que pouvait attendre la population tout entière. Étrange cérémonie pendant laquelle des heures durant furent psalmodiés 26 rituels au milieu des fumées d'encens, des bougies et au dernier acte, le choeur strident de sept enfants de 4 à 8 ans, chargés d'imiter par des croassements et des clappements, les grenouilles et les crapauds, ces messagers terrestres du dieu Chac, annonciateurs de la pluie. Les découvertes archéologiques du pays Maya commencèrent à être connues du monde entier quand John Lloyd Stephens, un avocat américain et Federick Catherwood, un architecte anglais découvrirent en 1839-1842 les cités Copan et Quirigua, Palenque, Uxmal, Chichen Itza, Tulum et les grands tertres de Dzilam, Izamal et Aké. C'était le point de départ d'une recherche scientifique qui ne cesse depuis plus d'un siècle, d'interroger les origines, les dieux, les prêtres et les gouvernants, les cultivateurs et les bâtisseurs. L'auteur résume les mythes et les théories esquissés par les épigones et cherche à comprendre les motifs de la décadence d'une société divisée par la guerre." (M. A. I.
