‎Thoughts On the Policy of the Crown Towards India [Hardcover]‎

‎The year 1857 was a Turning Point in the History of British India. In this year the Sepoy Mutiny broke out, which, though suppressed by force by the then Government of the East India Company, riveted the attention of all educated Englishmen on India. Statesmen, Parliamentarians and people concerned with the welfare of the British nation went deep into the causes of the Mutiny and analysed its immediate and far-reaching impacts on the Military Strength and Financial resources of England. The causes of the disaster were not far to seek. The general maladministration of the Company, their annexation policy, interference with the age-old practice of succession by adoption among the Indian princes, fear of the Indian people both the Hindus and the Musalmans - that the Government, with the help of the Christian missionaries, are trying to convert the whole nation into Christianity, Discrimination of the natives from the Englishmen in Civil and military services as well as in the administration of justice, etc. became known as the causes behind the Mutiny. The future of the Indian Empire appeared to be grim to all right thinking persons in England. As a result of this retrospection and debate at home, the British Government of Queen Victoria decided to act to the right direction. Then came the Queen's Proclamation, the India Bill was passed by the British Parliament, the time-honoured administration of the East India Company swept away, the Government of India was transferred to the Crown, and a reponsible Ministry for India established. The Queen's Proclamation was welcomed both in England and in India. It promised redress to all the above mentioned grievances and to establish an impartial clean Government for the Indians. The present work, written by a contemporary British thinker, is an interpretative Study of the Queen's proclamation and the post-mutiny policy of the Crown towards India. It takes up the Proclamation, section by section, and analyses the various promises contained therein. To make the subject properly understandable, the author has described the conditions existing prior to the Mutiny and the grievances of the people on various accounts, in great details. The work is a record of the State of affirs before and after the Reforms and an interpretation of the Policies of the British Government towards India. The work has been reprinted from the 1859 Edition in view of its importance as source Material for the study of the evolution of British Raj in India. ‎John William Kaye‎

‎A History of the Great Revolt Volume 3 Vols. Set [Hardcover] Volume 3 Vols. Set‎

‎The saga of 1857 revolt, the First War of Independence is written with painstaking care, and much toil and tears. It is a historian’s account of chain of events and their cascading effects, baring the truth lying buried deep under the official positions and unofficial assertions. Recounting the events, the author even risked stirring up of controversy. John William Kaye had mountain of important papers in his possession related to Sepoy War, and to add, promised of further assistance from the surviving actors in the hot scene. The story of the Indian Rebellion of 1857 is, perhaps, the most signal illustration of our great national character ever yet recorded in the annals of our country. It was a vehement and inordinate self-assertion of the Englishman that produced the conflagration, it was the same vehement self-assertion of Indian people showed in the First War of Independence, the Indians cherish even to the date. It is an engrossing and heart-throbbing narration-a must read for the present day generation of Indians. About The Author:- John William Kasye was a British Military historian of vast learning and eminence. He had a long career of writing and editing books on British Military. Contents:- CONTENTS:- # Bengal, Behar, and the North-West Provinces : At the Seat of Government : The Insurrection in Behar : The Siege of Arrah : Behar and Bengal : Mutiny and Rebellion in the North-West Provinces : Agra in May : Insurrection in the Districts : Bearing of the Native Chiefs : Agr in June and July : Agra in June and July : Agra in August and September : Lucknow and Delhi : Rebellion in Oude : Revolte in the Districts : Lucknow in June and July : The Sifge of Delhi : Capture of Delhi : Appendices and Addenda . From the Preface: "This study is presented for the purpose of clarifying and adding to the analyses which began in 1939. The results of earlier work were published in 1942. At this time the researches were somewhat hampered by the lack of precedent as to method. Some progress was made but obviously and perforce much was left undone. Therefore when a nearby deep excavation in the Back Bay region was opened for the purpose of constructing a building for the John Hancock Life Insurance Company we seized the opportunity to continue the work. Here we have the pleasure presenting a considerable quantity of new data." Quantity Available: 1. Shipped Weight: 4 lbs 3 oz. Category: Archaeology; Geology; Books; Science & Technology.
