‎Summary Around the turn of the first millennium, the political and religious landscape of Central Europe began to change dramatically. As the decentralized pagan societies along its borders became Christian, the polity that later became the Holy Roman Empire began to expand significantly according to the principles of the Imperium Christianum - an idea that first originated with Charlemagne, but that was consciously revived by Emperor Otto I and his predecessors as a way of extending power and authority into the Empire's newly converted eastern fringes. This acculturation was effective, and societies began to actively adopt the new ideology and social order on their own initiative. Drawing on material first presented at conferences held in the Department of Archaeology at Charles University, Prague, this volume draws together researchers working on different yet connected events along the Empire's eastern frontier, and the often-overlooked part of society who nevertheless participated in these events, in particular commoners and the rural population. The papers gathered here cover affairs of the early state and church, networks of archaeological and historical heritage, and archaeological, historical, and digital investigations, to offer a blend of both synthetic archaeological and historical overviews and more focused geographical and thematic case studies that explore the role of Christianization in the centralization processes that occurred at the edge of the Ottonian-Salian world. The result is a forward-looking volume that seeks to explore new approaches to historical narratives, in particular by emphasizing the importance of archaeological material in examining early state formation and religious change. ‎This collective work presents the preliminary results of excavations undertaken by the Canadian archaeological mission to Tell ?Acharneh, Syria in 1998, 1999, and 2002, as well as the results of a study season of excavated materials carried out in the Hama Museum in 2004. Field reports on each annual campaign, prepared by the director of the mission, describe the architectural remains according to their chronological and stratigraphic position at the site. Those reports are completed with specialized studies, written by different experts, of various categories of artifacts recovered over the course of excavations, such as pottery, coins and chipped stone artifacts. The archaeological studies are preceded by articles pertaining to epigraphic sources which make reference to Tunip, a city which is frequently documented in ancient texts and which corresponds most probably to the site of Tell ?Acharneh. Historical documents of the Middle Ages, during which time Tell ?Acharneh became designated by the toponym Tal Ibn Macher, are also discussed in this volume. Cet ouvrage collectif presente les resultats preliminaires des campagnes de fouilles qui ont ete menees par la mission archeologique canadienne en Syrie sur le site de Tell ?Acharneh en 1998, 2001 et 2002, ainsi que de la saison d?etude du materiel archeologique, issu de ces fouilles, qui eut lieu en 2004 au Musee de Hama. Les rapports de fouilles sur les campagnes annuelles, prepares par le directeur de la mission, decrivent les decouvertes architecturales en regard de la chrono-stratigraphie du site. Ces rapports sont completes par des etudes specialisees, realisees par differents experts, portant sur certaines categories d?artefacts recueillies au cours de ces fouilles: ceramique, pieces de monnaie et fragments d?artefacts en pierre taillee. Puisque Tell ?Acharneh pourrait bien correspondre a la ville antique de Tunip mentionnee dans plusieurs textes anciens, les etudes archeologiques sont precedees d?articles traitant de documents epigraphiques, deja connus, relatifs a cette ville. ‎Tomb Painting and Identity in Ancient Thebes, 1419-1372 BCE examines the style, iconography, and symbolism of painting in all extant private Theban tomb chapels decorated during the reigns of Thutmose IV and Amenhotep III. The book studies the ways in which pictorial imagery functioned on behalf of the dead in the afterlife, presented their identity to the living, and revealed underlying religious developments with important societal implications. Various aspects of the pre-Amarna Theban tomb are explored, from the tomb's purpose as a creative and commemorative vehicle for the deceased to the placement and functional properties of its imagery. The book also discusses the different styles of painting in the chapels of state and religious officials and how these styles reveal workshop organization and "patronage" practices in Thebes. The majority of the book is dedicated to the iconography of the functioning image in the tomb chapel, its reception, and its purpose as a bridge between what was represented and what was signified, between the mundane and the sacred, and between the living and the dead. Particular attention is paid to the iconography on the "western" back walls of the transverse hall in T-shaped tomb chapels, walls that held aesthetic, cultic, and symbolic significance to the ancient Egyptians. On these walls as well as the northern or southern long wall in rectangular tomb chapels, iconography and text commemorated the deceased's personal and professional identity, projected this identity into the hereafter, and contained key components for the tomb owner's rebirth. The eternal well-being of the deceased was secured through the iconography of gift giving that also mirrored religious trends that permeated society. ‎The Basilica of Sv. Marija Velika near Bale is, along with the early medieval Cathedral in Novi-grad, one of the most important Carolingian monuments in Istria. It is a part of a monastery complex, the remnants of which are still being excavated and researched. The church mani-fests traditional architectural forms: the origin of the three-aisled basilica with three-apsidal sanctuary with polygonal apses can be traced back to the time of Emperor Justinian, and the typology of capitals follows the famous 6th century examples from the basilica of Eufrasius in Porec, representing a variant of the type used in Constantinople and Ravenna. The hand of the stone-mason, ? The Master of Bale capitals? , was recognized also at some other Carol-ingian sites in Istria, and the products of his workshop were recognized as the first coherent pre-Romanesque sculptural opus in Istria, dated to the last quarter of the 8th century, to the time of important missionary activities in the areas under Carolingian rule.
