ISBN: 978-960-8145-93-1.</p><p>The author's interest in Thermos goes back to the time when he served as Ephor of Antiquities for Achaia and Aitoloakarnania 1976-1983. It was his obligation to deal with archaeological matters of that site such as the arrangement of the agora. Thus when in 1983 at the request of the Archaeological Society in Athens he undertook the continuation of the excavation of Thermos which had been conducted by Rhomaios until 1932 he began with the agora. Yet the burning archaeological questions of Thermos had mainly to do with the monuments and with the stratigraphical sequence below the horizon of the early archaic temples in the context of the prehistoric settlement with Megaron A the establishment of the first centuries after the disintegration of the Mycenaean world Megaron Î’ with its hypothetical colonnade and the ash altar. In archaeological circles indeed the prevailing idea was that those questions which had already been raised again in the past by Drerup Wesenberg Schmaltz Coulson Mallwitz and others before them should indeed be reexamined. Much time had passed moreover since the first revealing researches of the two succesive excavators George Soteriades and K.A. Romaios 1897-1916. The present monograph translated in Εnglish by Miriam Caskey is a condensed but in some places also revised and supplemented edition of the greek publication entitled "Thermos. ‎In english. Soft cover 21 cm 80 pp. ill. The Vasilikos river valley attracted the attention of a team from the British Museum as early as 1897. The first scientific research of the area was undertaken by the Cypriot archaeologist Porphyrios Dikaios who had also excavated at Khirokitia in 1939 and continued into the 1940s. Following a lull during which various accidental archaeological discoveries were made periodically in Kalavasos a multidisciplinary research project was conceived by Ian A. Todd in 1975. It was initiated by excavations in the Kalavasos area in 1976 and is still in progress. Its aim is to study the ancient environment and economy of the sites from the Early Neolithic to the end of the medieval period. The guide deals with the architectural remains and archaeological finds of the neolithic settlement of Tenta in the vicinity of Kalavasos a site already mentioned on Kitchener's 1882 map of Cyprus. The prehistoric sites of Kalavasos-Tenta and Khirokitia belong to the Aceramic Neolithic and both share certain common features: they were surrounded by walls and had mudbrick and/or stone circular domestic structures. The guide includes chapters on the Neolitic and Chalcolithic periods in Cyprus on the Aceramic Neolithic Period in the Vasilikos Valley as well as on the Bronze Age in the same area. In the main section the author gives a detailed description of the building materials and techniques used on the site the burial customs artifacts and economy as well as the protective roof which protects this important site.
