Jan Lemaire / Bram Van Meervelde / Jean-Michel Meyers
Jutten, / beachcombing on the banks of the river Schelde.
Softcover, 128 pages, illustrations in color, 26,5 x 22 cm, paperback, English text: The book has an introduction by mathieu and annelies of goodcopy.ink and a work by Rinus van de Velde. 1/250 numberd copies Signed. ISBN 9789464363142. Between March 2020 and November 2021 Bram Van Meervelde and Jan Lemaire went beachcombing on the banks of the river Schelde. The treasures and trouvailles were compounded in the book Jutten designed by Jean-Michel Meyers. . Why is it two men in boots keep trudging the mud in search of shards of the past? But a year has passed and on it goes, the larking, the scouring, the scavenging. One tea towel after another filled with coins, marbles, pipes. Finds have a strange hold over us. There?s a magic to them that shines on a lot longer than the soon fading glimmer of things we intentionally choose. That purposefulness is probably what kills our enthusiasm after a week or so. Because when we make a choice, there?s too much of ourselves in the object already. We don?t deem a consciously picked item deserving of a tea towel display. The more trash we?ve dug through to get to our treasure, the more it becomes. Hence the mud-crusted trouvailles. We?ve had to make our hands dirty and?like any good romance?half the pleasure lies in the hunt. So we go hunting for crap that?s out of place. Crap that becomes a find, simply because it was lost. A diamond is nothing very special in a jewellery store, but it?s everything when found among discarded fish. Yet maybe the real reason for this endless trawlings for trinkets is another story altogether. Not that of a seventeenth-century mariner tossing a coin into the Scheldt to buy a safe passage, but the belief that we?re not the ones that find the perfectly rounded rock, it?s the pebble that finds us. For all its muteness, it speaks to us.

Antwerpen, Romeinse stad?
Paperback, 138 pagina's, 24 x 16 x 0,9 cm. illustraties. ISBN 9789044137644.

eerste grote zilveren munten in Vlaanderen 1269-1322.
Hardback, 297x210mm, 364p, 896 bw and col. illustrations. Dutch (NL) edition . ISBN 9789461613011.

Art and the Sacred in Mumuyeland
Hardcover, HB, 280 x 210 mm, 144 pages , 90 illustrations, English edition. fine! ISBN 9789058566003. Despite some field research our knowledge of the sacred among the Mumuye is still embryonic. In all these acephalic groups of a binary and antinomic nature, the complex va constitutes an extremely varied semantic field in which certain aspects are accentuated depending on the circumstances. Religious power is linked to the strength contained in sacred objects, of which only the elders are the guardians. Moreover, this gerontocracy relies on a system of initiatory stages which one must pass to have access to the status of 'religious leader'. Geographically isolated, the Mumuye were able to resist the attacks of the Muslim invaders, the British colonial authority and the activities of the different Christian missions for a long time. As a result the Mumuye practised woodcarving until the beginning of our century. In 1970 Philip Fry published his essay on the statuary of the Mumuye of which the analysis of the endogenous network has so far lost nothing of its value. Basing himself on in situ observations, Jan Strybol attempted to analyse the exogenous network of this woodcarving. Thus he was able to document about forty figures and some masks and additionally to identify more than twenty-five Mumuye artists as well as a specific type of sculpture as being confined to the Mumuye Kpugbong group. During and after the Biafran war, hundreds of Mumuye sculptures were collected. Based on information gathered between 1970 and 1993 the author has demonstrated that a certain number of these works are not Mumuye but must be attributed to relic groups scattered in Mumuye territory.

The main historical significance of Dr. Janse's archaeological documents is to be found in the fact that they not only introduce to us the Chinese conquerors of what was to become Vietnam at the very moment when they were laying its foundations as a civilized nation buy they also reflect on Chinese culture and conditions even at home and may help to give us a clearer idea of what the Chinese were about the beginning of our era and what their quest was so far south of the Honanese cradle of their civilization. . The main historical significance of Dr. Janse's archaeological documents is to be found in the fact that they not only introduce to us the Chinese conquerors of what was to become Vietnam, at the very moment when they were laying its foundations as a civilized nation, buy they also reflect on Chinese culture and conditions even at home and may help to give us a clearer idea of what the Chinese were, about the beginning of our era, and what their quest was, so far south of the Honanese cradle of their civilization.
