The lithic artifacts presented in this report were excavated at La Libertad Chiapas Mexico in 1975-76 and first made available in 1977; a preliminary study of the obsidian was completed in 1978. As in any work of this extensive nature research was conducted and descriptions compiled over a number of years. In several cases collections were analyzed repeatedly in order to bring analysis more up to date. In 1978 the author analyzed the obsidian for an MA thesis and subsequent research made clear that technological analysis of the obsidian needed revision. One goal of the study has been to move beyond basic description and to show that data significant for resolving wider problems of economic and cultural evolution can be delivered from utilitarian stone artifacts.
