POTTERY IN THE ARCHAEOLOGICAL RECORD: GREECE AND BEYOND Acts on the International Colloquium Held At the Danish and Canadian Institutes in Athens June 20-22 2008
Aarhus University Press. Near Fine. 2011. Hardcover. 8779345875 . Very faint shelfwear. ; Archaeologists are increasingly focusing on the transformation of artifacts from their use in the past to their appearance in the archaeological record trying to identiy the natural and cultural processes that created the archaeological record we study today. In Classical Archaeology attention to these processes received an impetus by J. Theodore Pena's 2007 monograph Roman Pottery in the Archaeological Record which considered how ceramic vessels were made used and stayed in use serving various secondary purposes before finally being discarded. Pena relied mainly on evidence from Roman Italy which raises the question of the impact of similar cultural forces on pottery from other periods and places. His work accentuates the need to continue the process of building and developing explicit interpretive models of ceramic life-histories in Mediterranean archeology. With a view to beginning to address these challenges the editors invited a group of specialists in the pottery of Greece and the rest of the Eastern Mediterranean to a colloquium in Athens in June 2008 asking the contributors to recondiser Pena's general models approaches and examples from their own particular geographic and cultural perspectives. This publication constitutes the proceedings of this colloquium. ; Gösta Enbom Monographs 1; 9.6 X 8.9 X 0.7 inches; 168 pages . Aarhus University Press hardcover

Layard, Austen Henry.
A POPULAR ACCOUNT OF DISCOVERIES AT NINEVEH. Abridged by Him from His Larger Work.
pp. xxiii, 360 + Frontis. Numerous woodcuts and folding plans. Margin loss in Index. XLib. 12mo. Original full publisher's brown cloth, boards decorated in blind with designs of flowers and publisher's device. Extremities worn and slightly chipped. Remains of library numbers on spine. Hardbound. Sir Austen Henry Layard (1817-1894) was one of the leading British archaeologists of the nineteenth century. He was not a professional archeologist, and he wore many hats in his public career - diplomat, politician, art connoisseur, and a man of letters. He entered the London legal profession in 1836 under the sponsorship of his wealthy uncle, Benjamin Austen. He remained there until 1839 when he set off, with his traveling companion Edward Mitford, on his first expedition to Nineveh and the region of Mesopotamia at Mosul. Over the next decade the British Museum unloaded hundreds of tons of sculpture and artifacts from Layard's excavations. His books won acclaim for their mix of high adventure and archeology embroiled in an intoxicating stew of compelling characters and sudden crises. He made the Assyrians accessible to common people and brought alive a shadowy Biblical civilization. HOLY LAND BOX 1
