The temple of Apollo Hylates was first excavated systematically by George McFadden and the University of Pennsylvania in 1935. Two main architectural phases are now known to exist the earliest belonging to the latest Classical or Early Hellenistic period and the overlying second phase to the 1 st century A.D. As can be seen from the partial reconstruction the temple was a magnifcent construction occupying the highest and most commanding position at the end of the sacred street of the sanctuary. The four main chapters of the volume are devoted to a general outline of the city of Kourion and the temple followed by a history of archaeological investigation of the temple including excavation in 1983 prior to the reconstruction work. The finds from this excavation are discussed by Ieronymidou. ABOUT THE BOOK:- This is a thrilling tale of changing of political structure and imparting social democracy in a country with very ancient heritage of orthodoxy with anti-democratic, anti-national and anti-human character that marched through the bumpy paths of traditional hurdles and difficult process of democratization initiated by the British ‘Bureaucratic Democracy’ soon after the destruction of Paris Commune in Europe in 1871. The process started in the epicenter called Calcutta, the capital of British India till 1912. This is a tale of the rise of liberation movement of the Untouchables and the Sudras; its fall and restarting again under the colonial rule in India. It narrates the untold tales of the historical and pioneering democratic movements of the untouchable Chandals of Eastern India who formed the immense majority and the lowest stratum of the society. The audacious hope of the ‘Divine Slaves’, the ‘hereditary subject classes’ of the Hindu social system, poorest of the poor, devoid of human status, education and experience in the governance for becoming Kings and Rulers in the Parliamentary Democracy posed a tremendous threat for the ‘Hereditary Ruling Classes’ of India. The saga of this modern movement and cry for equal political rights to have proportional representation in the instrumentalities of the state i. e. Legislature, Executive and Judiciary eventually took a pathetic turn to ugly hatred between communities. The creamy-layer-ruling classes, foreign and Indian combine eventually pushed the country towards partition and declare the unfortunate untouchables and tribes of Eastern and Western India foreign nationals. About The Author:- S. K. Biswas was born in Calcutta on 21st August 1947. He was educated in a missionary school, The Scottish Church Collegiate School and College; graduated in (Political Science Hons), did MA in History. He had passed the IAS Etc. Exam 1975, joined the Central Secretariat, Delhi in 1977 and superannuated as the Joint Registrar General, India, Census Dept, Ministry of Home, Govt. of India. While in harness, all along he was an activist in Marxist movement in Calcutta till the shock of Marich Jhapi massacre by the Jyoti Basu government in W. Bengal in 1978. He had Started Ambedkarite movement in Delhi, donated the portraits of Dr. Ambedkar in the library and in the Central Hall of the Parliament House. In pursuance of his demand in the Parliament (Central Hall speech) Dr. Ambedkar was conferred with Bharat Ratna posthumously in 1991. Biswas is a veracious reader, prolific writer and fundamentally original thinker. Apart from intellectual pursuit he has created a number of organizations for socio-cultural and literary movements.
