Cites Maya
194 pages with maps figures drawings plates some in color Folio 12 1/2" x 8 3/4" bound in original publisher's beige cloth with red lettering to spine and cover in original pictorial jacket. First edition limited to 1000 copies. Maya cities were the centers of population of the pre-Columbian Maya civilization of Mesoamerica. They served the specialized roles of administration commerce manufacturing and religion that characterized ancient cities worldwide. Maya cities tended to be more dispersed than cities in other societies even within Mesoamerica as a result of adaptation to a lowland tropical environment that allowed food production amidst areas dedicated to other activities. They lacked the grid plans of the highland cities of central Mexico such as Teotihuacán and Tenochtitlan. Maya kings ruled their kingdoms from palaces that were situated within the center of their cities. Cities tended to be located in places that controlled trade routes or that could supply essential products. This allowed the elites that controlled trade to increase their wealth and status. Such cities were able to construct temples for public ceremonies thus attracting further inhabitants to the city. Those cities that had favourable conditions for food production combined with access to trade routes were likely to develop into the capital cities of early Maya states. Condition: Previous owner's name on front end paper corners gently bumped. DW spine ends and corners chipped closed edge tears else a very good copy in like jacket. Albert Guillot hardcover

ROMAN COINS AND PUBLIC LIFE UNDER THE EMPIRE E. Togo Salmon Papers II
Dustjacket is protected in mylar. ; 0.72 x 9.48 x 6.2 Inches; 216 pages; Roman coins often shed light on Roman public life and society through the legends, portraits, and images they bear. The papers collected in this volume were originally presented at the Second E. Togo Salmon Conference on Roman Studies. The eight contributors are specialists in Roman coins or Roman history and in the relations between them. Coins are a unique source of information about the Roman world. In the case of the Roman Empire they were issued by or with the approval of the ruling power. The representations and legends they show therefore present an official view of contemporary affairs. The coins themselves, minted for official purposes such as paying the army, when studied carefully can help reconstruct official policies. They can also occasionally reveal what monuments now lost may have looked like. It is not infrequent to come across pleas that the ancient historian should make more frequent use of numismatic evidence. These essays make clear that efforts are being made both by numismatists and by historians to bring the two disciplines together. At the same time the papers reveal that the task is by no means a straightforward one. The survival of Roman coins is variable, and so attempts to reconstruct the size and distribution of issues calls for skilled and experienced analysis. This collection of papers provides evidence for the kind of deductions that the historian may make from Roman coins as well as the illustrations of the pitfalls that await the unwary. Those interested in Roman history, amateur coin collectors, and professional numismatists will all find much here to widen their knowledge of the public context of Roman coins. Contributors: William E. Metcalf, P. Bruun, Barbara Levick, R. P. Duncan-Jones, Anthony Barrett, Duncan Fishwick, C. E. King, Andrew Burnett.

Paulos Chryssostomou, et al
Agrosykia: henas oikismos ton prohistorikon kai historikon chronon

AGROSYKIA Macedonia: A Settlement of the Prehistoric and Historical Years

In Greek. Hard cover 24 cm 240 pp. ill. ISBN: 978-960-7905-36-9.

The scattered ruins in "Peliti" hill or "Kastri" hill of Agrossykia village today being a municipal apartment of Pella municipality attracted the interest livened up in the imagination of the residents of the region and created legends and traditions about hidden treasures of the era of Alexander the Great. This was the cause that many gold-dingers who were seeking their fortune dug holes in several points of the settlement and destroued parts of the walls and part of the Tower A in the southern side of the Christian wall. However the beginning of the excavating researches in the settlement also marked the general topographic research of the yet unknown northern Bottiaea. The test sections that took place in various places in the settlement by P. Chrysostomou the archaeologist in charge for the province of Giannitsa initially aimed at the determination of the time and the duration of its dwelling. During the excavating period 1984-85 the fact that the settlement had already been dwelled diachronically by the prehistoric years was confirmed. The collaboration with Ioannis Aslanis researcher of the Institute of Greek and Roman antiquity of the National Institution of Researches was judged as essential so as for the the material of the Neolithic Chalcolithic era to be systematically observed. The findings of these excavations are published in this book.

.

.

==============================================================

IMPORTANT: The price does NOT include the shipping cost which depends on actual weight and destination.
