GREEK ART AND ARCHAEOLOGY
Wraps have light edgewear. Light corner creasing to a few pages. Some highlighting and underlining in pencil to pages. ; This revised edition of John Griffiths Pedley's 1993 survey covers 3,000 years of Greek history with nearly 400 illustrations and an authoritative text that centers on material culture, especially pottery, statuary, and architecture. Greek Art and Archaeology incorporates recent scholarship on matters such as influences from the Near East and the spread of Greek ideas to other parts of the Mediterranean. Of special interest is Pedley's building-by-building history of the Parthenon, including a useful survey of its metopes and friezes. He also offers well-considered stylistic notes on familiar objects, such as the Laocoön group and the Nike of Samothrace. ; 2nd Edition; 384 pages

THE LIFE AND WORK OF FRANCIS WILLEY KELSEY Archaeology, Antiquity, and the Arts
1 corner very lightly bumped. Else fine. ; President of the Archaeological Institute of America, professor at the University of Michigan from 1889 to 1927, and president of the American Philological Association, Francis Kelsey was crucially involved in the founding or growth of major educational institutions. He came to maturity in a period of great technological change in communications, transportation, and manufacturing. Kelsey took full advantage of such innovations in his ceaseless drive to promote education for all, to further the expansion of knowledge, and to champion the benefits of the study of antiquity. A vigorous traveler around the United States, Europe, and the Mediterranean, Kelsey strongly believed in the value of personally viewing sites ancient and modern and collecting artifacts that could be used by the new museums and universities that were springing up in the United States. This collecting habit put him in touch with major financiers of the day, including Charles Freer, Andrew Carnegie, and J. P. Morgan, as he sought their help for important projects. Drawing heavily on Kelsey's daily diaries now held at the University of Michigan's Bentley Historical Library, John Griffiths Pedley gives us a biography that records the wide-ranging activities of a gifted and energetic scholar whose achievements mirrored the creative and contributive innovations of his contemporary Americans. ; 468 pages

Peet, T. (Thomas) Eric, C. (Charles) Leonard Woolley. With Chapters by Battiscombe Gunn and P. L. O. Guy and Drawings and Plans by F. G. Newton.
The City of Akhenaten. Part I: Excavations of 1921 and 1922 at el-'Amarneh. (The Egypt Exploration Society 38th Memoir).
Quarto. Pp. vii, 176. Plus 64 plates, some of which are folding, some coloured, bound at end. With 30 text figures. Hardcover, bound in the original publisher's quarter cloth and printed boards, spine lettered in red. Endpapers and boards age toned, bit rubbed. An excellent copy. ~ First edition. Rare scholar's copy from the library of renowned Egyptologist Prof. Dr. Heerma van Voss with his charming bookplate inside cover. Occasionally with his neat pencil annotations. One page is heavily annotated in pencil in the margins and includes many cross-references to other sources, a useful concordance. All the photographic plates are printed in collotype, one of the most accurate and attractive methods of photomechanical tonal printing processes. Highly skilled and expensive process, it cannot produce more than a limited number of impressions. It has been used for single-sheet prints and luxury portfolios, and since the 1950s has been abandoned by all except a few small specialist firms. Few of these plates are printed in coloured collotype, an exceptionally complicated process which consequently is seldom used in book production. Beinlich-Seeber 5570.

PEISSEL, Michel (1937-2011).
El mundo perdido de los Mayas. Exploraciones y aventuras en Quintana Roo. [1958].
