Strong, James.
SACRED IDYLS: A Metrical Version of Solomon's Song with Appropriate Explanations.

Slim quarto. James Strong was born in New York City in 1822. His father, Thomas, came from England in 1815. The son was left an orphan at an early age, and in 1839 began the study of medicine, but the failure of his health led to its abandonment. He was graduated at Wesleyan in 1844, taught two years in Poultney, Vermont, and then failing health again compelled his retirement to a farm in Newtown, Long Island. Eighteen months later he settled at Flushing, where he followed biblical studies. He held various local offices, took an active interest in town development, and projected and built the Flushing Railroad, of which he was President. He gave gratuitous private instruction to classes in Greek and Hebrew, which led to his first literary labor, the preparation of brief manuals of Greek, Hebrew, and Chaldee grammar (1856-1869). From 1858 till 1861 he was professor of Biblical Literature and acting president of Troy University. He then returned to Flushing to engage in public improvements. Starting in 1868 he was Professor of Exegetical Theology in Drew Theological Seminary, Madison, New Jersey. Dr. Strong traveled in Egypt and Palestine in 1874, and was a member of the American branch of the Palestine Exploration Committee. This important poetic and scholarly work seems to be left off of the inventories of his numerous publications. This is a very remarkable book in many ways. **PRICE JUST REDUCED! W146.

Count Autrey is most famous as an author and controversialist. As a young man he was a lieutenant in the regiment in Bourgogne. But he left his regiment in 1745 and retired to his estates, and devoted himself to the struggle of the encyclopedists and to the defense of the Christian religion. In philosophy he followed Diderot and Voltaire. Heinrich Schliemann (1822-1890) was born in Neubukow, Mecklenburg-Schwerin (Germany) but was a world-traveler as a treasure hunter and pioneer archaeologist. An advocate of the historical reality of places mentioned in the works of Homer, he became the first important excavator of Troy and of the Mycenaean sites Mycenae and Tiryns. Schliemann brought dedication, enthusiasm, conviction a large fortune, and a great deal of luck to the work. His personal history is quite fascinating. At the Tiryns excavation he worked with Wilhelm Dorpfeld (1853-1940) a German architect, best known for his contributions to classical archaeology, and the wonderful drawings in this volume. **PRICE JUST REDUCED! Beautifully illustrated: collotype is one of the most accurate and attractive methods of photomechanical tonal printing processes. Highly skilled and expensive process, it cannot produce more than a limited number of impressions. It has been used for single-sheet prints and luxury portfolios, and since the 1950s has been abandoned by all except a few small specialist firms.

Most uncommon in this issue of original publisher's printed wrappers and including the practically always missing errata-slip. With inscription and contemporary bookplate of Norfolk & Norwich Library on upper wrap. Beinlich-Seeber 18874, quoting the book unseen. Charles Piazzi Smyth (1819-1900) was astronomer-royal for Scotland, professor of practical astronomy at the University of Edinburgh, fellow of the Royal Astronomical Society and of the Royal Societies of London and Edinburgh. He was heavily influenced by pyramid theorist John Taylor who theorized that the Great Pyramid was planned and the building supervised by the biblical Noah. Refused a grant by the Royal Society, Smyth went on an expedition to Egypt in order to accurately measure every surface, dimension, and aspect of the Great Pyramid. He subsequently published his book "Our Inheritance in the Great Pyramid" (1864). He claimed that the measurements he obtained from the Great Pyramid of Giza indicated a unit of length, the pyramid inch, a God-given measure handed down through the centuries from the time of Israel. His conclusion was that the architects of the pyramid could only have been directed by the hand of God.
